How would you achieve this effect (Dunkin Donuts spots)
I’m wondering if any of the gurus can help with this one.
I’m trying to create a cool way for some art cards to wipe on over video. I’m trying to make the art card sort of “whisp” onto the frame slowly. Thin tendrils of smoke creeping on from left to right, getting thicker and thicker untilt the frame is filled. I don’t want it to actually look like real smoke, just to convey the sense of how smoke moves. The latest dunkin donut tags use this effect, and i can’t figure out how to pull this off short of hand animating it (which i would suck at.) Any suggestion? Sorry I can’t post any examples to look at, but I wouldn’t know where to find one. Thanks!!!

I looked at it frame by frame. Even though it’s a 2D look, 3D stroke would do it incredibly quickly. Because all it is whispy shaped lines with tapered ends. If you use 3D stroke, Make a few whispy masks. Apply 3D stroke to them, color them puples and oranges and animate the start and end points and turn on tapering. It should look pretty close. In fact I think the 3D stroke solution would look better.
Looking closely at theirs though I think they did it somewhat by hand, but it’s only a handful of frames so shouldn’t take too long. You can also get some good ideas from this awesome tutorial:
