Have you tried it without a perfect frame by frame match? I would think as long as the background moves at a similar but not exact frame rate it could still have a convincing look. Why not try some various rates with Posterize Time and see if any work out.

You could try something like duplicating the layer, isolating luminance with shift channels, blurring that, adding tritone, and using a transfer mode over the original footage.

Magic Bullet’s deartifacter might help some.

AE does not work with HDV intraframe compression. Convert the footage to another codec before bringing into AE.

I’m not an expressions guy; you might want to try that forum.
But if there are any inconsistencies in the frame rate rate of the stop motion footage I don’t think an expression would be helpful.
Your stop motion layer has a consistent frame rate as footage, even if the internal content was shot at a variable rate. AE has no way of seeing or interpreting the shooting rate, and so wouldn’t be able to access that parameter in an expression – if I understand your situation correctly.
I think you have to do it manually.Joey Foreman

Think of the camera tools as a way to drive your Active Camera when in that view. In the custom view they control a sort of all seeing eye, separate from the camera. You can see your camera in custom views, and move it around with axis handles just like any other object/layer.

Some things are better animated by hand. A thought bubble that exactly matched the movements of the owner’s head would look bizarre, as though it were attached by a stiff invisible rod.

June 14, 2008 at 3:08 pm in reply to: What is the deal with the uncontrollable motion curves? You can set up all the viewports you want and endlessly tweak all the control handles you want, but if you would simply like a layer to come to rest on a path, then start up again along the path – convert the keyframe at which your layer should stop to a Hold Keyframe. Give it some ease. Down the timeline a bit, copy and paste this keyframe and convert it to the type of interpolation you want, ease out, and continue your path.
AE is neither counterintuitive nor confusing once you’ve mastered your toolset.
