Thanks, Eric. Actually I also wanted to see your entire AE UI so I can look at your layers as well.

Screen Captures. “Snapshots” of your screen
so we can see the problems you’re describing.

If you have Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously on, you might try switching it off. I remember it was known to cause rendering errors in CS3. They might have fixed it.

It’s a bit off topic, but you don’t have to jump through all of Compressor’s hoops to get an aiff. Just export the track from Quicktime Player and get back about five or ten minutes of your life.

Not the awful Quicktime Player X, but Quicktime 7, which is in the Utilities folder.

Seems like there ought to be an expression that makes the numbers effect return letters instead. Maybe a precomp of this could be Shattered in reverse.
Or do AE’s fancy new text operators generate random characters as a function?
I’m too tired to look it up.

What I mean is they will darken as the base layer’s brightness is raised.

It seems the base layer in a luma matte must have a brightness value higher than pure black in order to receive a shadow – visibly, at least. Not sure that theory is sound on all levels, but this seems to work:

Try bringing up the luma level of your solid in Solid Settings by shifting the color up in brightness a tad.

The shadows will show up. They may be hard to see against transparency, but put in a solid below and you’ll see them.

Just to add to Todd’s comprehensive response, I’d go with ProRes over DVCPro (if you’re on a Mac), just because it, DVCPro, tends to default to its own flavor of non-square pixel aspect ratio, and can be a headache finding the correct one to implement for a round trip to your editing app.

ProRes retains your correct display dimensions, regardless of source codec or pixel aspect ratio.

    It’s more user-friendly.
