that was my question, if there was a way to get AE into FCP without rendering it…but i guess we can’t.
AVID DS takes in Photoshop and Illustrator files as layers (but not AE)..I was wondering if there was a way to do something similiar. Thanks for the answers.
Is there a best way to export field dominance? Since FCP automatically pops upper field first when you import the movie, (although it can be changed, and sequence can be changed) is it better to spit out the original movie upper first from AE to bring it into FCP…so FCP isn’t rearranging fields?

what if you render in chunks, and everything is fine, meaning there are no corrupt clips, but if you try to render the whole sequence to make sure you got everything, it still crashes…

i can render in chunks, but when I go to render complete timeline, it crashes. This happens with either 2600HD or 1900XT card installed…
the fiber card is only installed, fiber is not connected at this point, only SCSI.

looks like the effect cannot render issue is the graphics card…changing it out for a 1900XT, which all the other 8 core FCPs have…that’s a 512 card, where the 2600HD in there now is a 128 card, so that solves 1 problem…
the other problem, I think I have some weird media issue i’m trying to track down now.

thanks for the responses….SCSI and FIBER, both are needed, not at the same time though, but I would hate to swap in the right card between sessions…
a little more trouble shooting is starting to look like the 2600 graphics card is the culprit…i installed a 1900 from one of our other FCPs, and so far it looks like it is working correctly, not crashing.
a clue was probably the error message telling me i couldn’t render Bad TV effect with this hardware (graphics card)…i’ll update if indeed this is the issue.

get a Gretag Macbeth Display 1, and buy Calman software…then you have to find out how to calibrate your grayscale, then you can correctly set up your whites and black level, then color…
we use Panasonic 42PZ85U plasmas in all our FCP suites to replace our Sony CRT monitors, and they are VERY accurate, you can get by with using them, but for any CRITICAL viewing, you can’t beat a CRT…
does your monitor have a Color Management solution to map your color points? I don’t think that one does…Toshibas have them (I have one at home, all set up nicely) but our Panny’s don’t, and they are extremely close to Rec 709 color space…close enough that we use them instead of the Sonys…

totally forgot I asked this question….
so does the frame offset do anything to your output to tape? or will your output be frame accurate?
most importantly would be inserting to tape…if you’re offset, does that affect timecode?which view is offset, the canvas view, or the Kona output?

interesting thing…since I got that error, and checked the info to verify the video card, i noticed i only had 7GB of ram, i had just upgraded to what I thought was 8GB, but when I looked, i had 2 512 chips instead of the 2 1gb chips, so i found the 1gb chips, threw them in, and noticed that my ram wasn’t stacked correctly either…mismatched pairs, so i remedied that, rebooted, opened the project, didn’t get the effect can’t render error, and now I’m rendering the whole show…seems to be going splendidly…so far….
so double and triple check things when you upgrade, lol
(it was early, coffee hadn’t set in yet, and i was still tired…not an excuse, a reason!)

we use 6x11s, editors seem to like them the best
i use a 12×12 on an AVID DS, you can set the portion of the tablet being used to cover the screen, so it is adjustable…i do a lot of mattes in DS, and the larger tablet works great for that…but in FCP, a 6×11 wide should be fine…(we have a 20″ left monitor and a 24″ wide monitor on the FCPs BTW)

thanks Rory, so a regular same as source QT, output time is probably long for that too…i’ll try that…and 4 instances instead of 7…do i start sharing, or keep that off, does it matter? sharing just allows other FCPs to see that cluster, right?
