8bit uncompressed is at the edge of what a single drive can handle. I would suggest DV50. Looks just as good at 1/3 the bandwith.

We were runing that exact set up in NTSC with 4 gigs of ram. There was a conflict with the BM drivers and some Motion effects. The solution was to turn off the BM desktop. Also you may have to feed the deck a sync signal. Either use a Black burst generator or have the BM card generate black and feed that to the deck.

The BM site has all the older drivers availible. I’m not sure, but I think the 5.5 or 5.6 driver package is what you need for that vintage of software.

HDV uses an mpeg transport stream. I believe DVDs, HD-DVDs and Blu-ray use an mpeg program stream. There are differences in how the data is muxed. Maybe someone more techno savy can chime in as to those diffenrences. The end result is that HDV has to be re-encoded for any DVD distribution.

Also, make sure you don’t use the motion tab to move titles. That will make them look chunky in any codec.

In Motion you can right click on any parameter and select randomise to get some pretty nifty effects. Play with opacity.

This is a service with a still camera that, via cell phone, sends a picture to a server as often as you want. You download the stills and make your movie.

We have never used them but seem nice on the phone. We use a home made time lapse still digital camera rig. It requires every-other day attention to change batteries and mem sticks. Works great for shorter events. (state fair, circus, etc.)

The oxblue solution seem perfect for construction jobs.

Upgraded 4 G5 dual 2 gig and 2 G5 dual 2.3 gig boxes when the 5.1 crossgrade became availible. The ONLY issue we had was older projects with Boris 3D titles. Kerning and leading were all messed up. The only reason we’re holding off on 5.1.2 is we’re in the middle of a bunch of work. Go for it.

You should be able to import The file directly into FCP and get a sequence from it.

  • Open Large Can of Worms! I shouldn’t say this here but we often open each others projects (4 editors over 5 FCP 5.1.1 systems)and media drives over gigibit ethernet. Never silmutaniously of course. We often work for hours this way with little more than a few dropped frames. WE never Digitize or output this way. Our projects are DV and DV50. I realize this is not recomened but it works for us.

I have noticed this rarely. Never move Boris Text with the motion tab as Jerry states. It really chews it up. I just disable and then re-enable the clip forcing a re-render. This almost always clears it up.
