Thanks for the information Bob. I think I’m going to have to go with 10 drives and possibly the Caldigit rack product. The 1 Tb drives sound cool but I try to stay with stuff that’s been on the market at least 6 months so will stay with 500s or 750s. I may try to move to RAID 3 or 5 when we go to shared storage next year but for now I have a workflow that protects my project files pretty well, and only media that can be recaptured or rerendered is stored on the RAID 0.
So…I can understand the difficulty of picking one drive out of all the options out there, but if you were building a Sonnet 500P RAID today, what would you buy? Or do you just throw suction darts at the list on the newegg website and then hit the buy button? 😉

As long as you keep the color code the same on each RS-422 connection, the ethernet cables will keep everything pin to pin through the rest of the connections. That’s how it works for us. Bob, let us know if I’m oversimplifying here.

Well yes, that’s correct. We do own a punchdown tool and that’s how we did it. Bob’s solution is simpler, no doubt. It took our engineer about an hour to wire the panel for three rooms and four decks.

We built one of these RJ45 patch panels using the TrendNET TC-P16C6, available on newegg for $33.95. Works very well for very little money.

I have a completely different drive setup than yours, but I have had the exact same symptoms and they have always been because of corrupted media. Once it was a Quicktime file that was exported by a client from iMovie that I was using as a reference clip in a project. Re-exporting that clip in Quicktime was the fix there, but other times I’ve simply had to redigitize or rerender the clip that’s causing the problem.
This has only happened 3-4 times in the last couple of years, but when it does it can send you off in all sorts of directions trying to fix the problem. I’ve even reinstalled EVERYTHING on the computer including the OS, only to have the same problem once I opened up the project.
I can’t tell you for sure that this is your problem, but it sounds very familiar. Hope this is helpful.

Haven’t done a test with sequence files, since that’s an added step to the workflow. Image sequences, if converted back to Quicktime on the PC version of Quicktime 7, would show the same problems, I’m pretty sure. And moving image sequences over a network in order to convert them to Quicktime on the Mac takes a lot longer than moving a Quicktime. It works for me to use Quicktime 6.3 instead of 7.x, so for now that’s what I’ll do.
Any PC users out there having the same issues? We’ve seen it on 2 PCs, with both combustion and After Effects.

As it turns out, this particular problem was a driver issue. Although I had a Kona Control Panel installed, it was not properly communicating with the card so wasn’t telling it to downconvert. Reinstall of the drivers fixed the problem. I know, should have tried that first, but under pressure of deadline thought a ping to the Cow would also be a good idea.

The Kona-2 SDI is normalled into the DBeta machine, and I can see the output of the Kona-2 through the deck as long as my easy setup is NTSC SD. When I switch to the DVCProHD easy setup, the picture goes away, and so does sync.
Do you normally have to change something on the DBeta deck when you change from an SD to HD setup?
