If you have Trapcode… you can control the “burst” by changing the velocity and/or number of particles and/or size of particles… you can even assign a track to the movement of particles.

Well…if I read your post correctly… I have done something similar.
The easy way will be to create a difference matte… but, the problem with come when you have two moving objects in the same frame AND the background of each shot is not exact.
The idea of keying will work if the background is blue/green screen… but, that is not the case… so, the directors suggestion will not be as easy as he seemed to assume.
So… it seems, the solution is most likely rotoscoping (which is what I ended up doing). And, this solution could be a major pain if you have moving legs in the composite… leg movements are a bear to rotoscope. If this is a rotoscoping project… I would strongly suggest you use Mocha if you can afford it.
Exactly how hard this will be to pull off depends upon how it was film.

If you have gaming software on your drive…
That could very well be the source of your problem…
You need a clean re-install of both OS and Adobe software (only) to be certain.

If you are getting desperate looking for options…
…try changing out your video card…preferable one that is NOT compatible with DX10…. in your case that would be a 7000 series instead of the 8000 series.
I have seen situations where this can cause problems… although the problems are with Avid editiors and not so much with AE.
I think this is a slim chance this could be your problem… but, it appears you are starting to run out of options. Hopefully, this unlikely culprit (i.e., change the video card) may save the day.

Your example was probably done with a lot of preparation during the original filming of the sketched characters…. and, used a good blue/green screen.
But…the post editing to achieve this line sketch can be achieved with a photoshop IF you plan the shot right… what is “exactly right”, depends heavily upon what you want to achieve with this style of editing.
Personally, I would use the photoshop’s color pencil artistic filter on each frame… and work the process out on a single frame until you get close (…just how close you can achieve this effect with the least amount of work, depends heavily upon how you film the original frame source). After you have done this, you would want to automate this process with PS’s Batch or Create Droplette (…which you should use depends upon how much RAM you have and much automation is need during the keystroke recording process). Finally, you would import this into a good editing software and strobe the frames to remove frames to achieve a cartoon-like motions.
None of this process would require rotoscoping (assuming you film it correctly)… but, could require some touching up of frames (which will be signficantly easier and faster than rotoscoping).
I may not be specific enough in this post… but, quite honestly… to provide a lot of detail would take a lot of time and would make a pretty good tutorial for those who make instructional tutorials. At least hopefully, I may have given you a direction from which to start. For details, you might do a search of the site and look for references regarding cartoon effect and/or Photoshop keystroke recording. It may take some time to research, but you will find some useful information and details about achieving the results you indicated in your example.

BTW, you might have noticed… I made no mention of using AE to achieve this line sketch effect. The only use of AE may be in some tracking issues (and… I think it would be much easier and faster to do tracking for the sample video with Imagineer’s Mocha). Other than tracking (…if you don’t have Mocha), to achieve the sample video line sketch effect you could be better off using photoshop and a pro-level editing software.

…look at PS’s Filter>Sketch>Stamp … that should get you where you need to be much easier and faster than Artistic>color pencil (using a black and white picture).

Well… that’s because you need to be in the directory that can be found by following these steps.
For Internet Explorer 7.0
Tools>Internet Options>in the General Tap click under Browsing history>Settings>View Files
You will find the temporary internet files… the flv files WILL be there if you have already gone to the site and watch the video (i.e., they have been downloaded).
Then copy and paste the file where you want it… you can then view it at any time by opening up that file.
I do this all the time.

You could use AE’s motion tracker as a stabilizer… but, that is pretty time consuming considering you can get a relatively inexpensive software in combination with a pro-level NLE to do this for you.
Look up ProDad… Mercalli (sp?). This is by far the best and easiest stablizer I have found (even better/easier than using the “AE and motion tracking” method (…well,let me correct that by saying…Mercalli is the best except for one other motion stabilizing software but it is VERY expensive… and, not worth mentioning if you get ProDad’s Mercalli).
