December 24, 2011 at 1:18 am in reply to: Camcorder Canon XL1s, what should I do….????

My advice to you is don’t do it. Not because the camera is SD, you can still do plenty of fine work shooting mini-dv sd. The main issue here is that those cameras are quite old and Canon is no longer supporting that series, so you’d be taking a huge risk if anything breaks. I don’t know what your budget is, but I’d advise looking at the recently discontinued Canon XL-2. It’s the follow-on to the XL-1 series and will at least be supported by Canon for a number of years. Also, there are any number of budget-priced hd camcorders now on the market. Take a little more time and shop around.

Thanks for the advice and no way would I use footage without making sure it’s licensed. I’ve been at this a long time and have a large collection of “royalty free” music for my productions, but strangely this is the first time I have needed to seriously look at stock footage.

OK, so why exactly are you willing to risk having your good name attached to this disaster?

I’m using the Audio Technica 1800 series very successfully and they typically fall into the mid-price range. BTW, Azden often gets knocked pretty badly on this site but I’ll tell you that I have also used mid-range Azden products successfully (not the low end stuff). I’ll say this about Azden, their product support is top notch. If you do need service they will bend over backwards to help you, something that is too often lacking in other companies.

If this was done for a non-profit of any sort (charity, museum, house of worship, school, etc.) than just establish a value for your work and ask them to write you a letter acknowledging your “in-kind” donation of services. That’s your proof of the the value of your donation for tax purposes.

October 21, 2011 at 1:41 am in reply to: Tax ID? Same as business registration? Massachusetts

No, your tax ID is your IRS tax ID. If you don’t have one you’ll need to apply for one. If you used a service to incorporate or otherwise register your business they normally would’ve taken care of that for you. If not then ask your accountant or go to the IRS website to apply for one. I used Florida Incorporation Services here in Florida to establish my LLC and they took care of everything State and Federal for me. I’m sure there’s a similar online service that can take care of your needs in Mass.

October 14, 2011 at 2:02 am in reply to: New HD camera…?

I also recently, during the past year, upgraded to an HD format, but in my case I chose the excellent and time tested Canon XH-A1s and added a Datavideo DN-60, so now I record simultaneously to tape and compact flash, and a recent shoot confirmed the wisdom of my choice. One clip on the CF was corrupted, but thankfully it was also on tape and I was able to cover my butt and deliver the product, and I have a happy client. So I have SD or HD recording, dual format backup and archival storage on tape. And yeah, as mentioned by others, many, maybe most, don’t know or much care if you shoot in HD or SD, especially if the end product winds up on the web or an sd dvd, but with my kit I’m covered. Under $4K gets you a camcorder, CF recorder and two high end 32GB cards. Go for it.

September 30, 2011 at 11:57 pm in reply to: Multiple Wireless Lavalier Systems in one venue

I’ve had as many as 15 operating simultaneously in one venue in the NYC area. Check the manufacturer’s websites for the systems you’re using for recommended frequencies/groups in your operating area. Check the FCC website for tv stations operating within a 50 mile radius and stay as far away from those frequencies as possible. Set up as far in advance as possible and keep all channels active as long as possible to listen and watch for occassional spikes of interference, and then re-tune the affected mics. Lots of advance preparation and setup time equals successful events and shoots.

September 12, 2011 at 6:13 pm in reply to: Sports Videography Ethics Question

Aaron, you should consult an attorney who is conversant in contract law, especially as concerns media. You’re not shooting for the school, you’re shooting for a private individual, so you may not be covered by any waivers that cover the school, especially if you then re-edit for distribution to other individual clients. That being said, why on earth are you hauling your gear out to a football field, exposing it and yourself to the elements, wear and tear and possible damage and putting your professional skills to work for $100.00/game? If these people have “money to burn” they should be paying you a decent rate for what has to be at least a 1/2 day commitment plus editing.
