All these posts are concerning me, I’m shooting a feature film and have planned to edit on Vegas, I’m now wondering if CS5 might be the go. Any suggestions?

No problems, I’ll keep you posted. I’m still struggling on the best way to tackle this. Should I break it up and create a different project for each script and later import it into one final timeline? Should I attempt to edit everything into one timeline, it takes for ever just to load each day’s shoot and I’m not even half way. I have all my sound files separate, plus all my takes and some are over 20 takes for one scene, all on 1080p, you can imagine the size of the project on a shooting ratio of around 15:1. I definitely need more ram. I’m also using two sata drives that have been stripped, everything plays in real time even with color grading but it stills crashes quite often. I think the ram (8gigs) is the issue. I’ll probably upgrade to 32gigs. I would also like to invest in “Movie Looks” for color grading, but I don’t think it supports Vegas 9 in 64bit just yet. I’m not a big fan of the color correction in Vegas unless someone can prove me otherwise. I’m aiming completion around end of August and plan for the big screen. From what I hear having an external battery pack can reduce the heat problem as it acts as some type of heat sync. But then again they are just rumors I’ve heard, might be worth investigating. This was for the 7D but same concept for any DSLR.

Actually I’ve just ordered DP1. Hopefully they are as good as I’ve heard. The price seems very reasonable for what you get. I’m shooting my first 7D feature (photography this Friday) so I need something damn good as focusing is a huge issue. I see a lot of DSLR footage which isn’t quite on the money at the expense of overdone shallow depth.
Remember that we are shooting people not statues! Close that iris a couple of stops if unsure. I’ll keep you posted on how good this DP1 monitor is. -

I’m about to start my first feature soon with a 7D. Any advice you can give me? The audio is probably my major concern as it’s quite dialogue intensive. The last thing I want to do is ADR. Any suggestions to get the best audio possible? I hate the thought of recording audio separately, but I may have no better option. I’d like to know if the Juicedlink DN101 is good enough, it seems to trick the auto gain somehow. Or should I go the Zoom H4N option. I also know that magic lantern are reworking the software for the 7D, but how good will the signal to noise ratio be. I’ve seen a few tests on YouTube but it’s difficult to really tell. -
Just the fact that an under $2,000 camera body (7D) can be compared to a red, leaves little room for argument. Just go out and shoot, the average punter won’t even know the difference even on a big screen.
Again, buy what you can afford. These are exciting times! -

I use the canon one as per your link. It seems to be a good all rounder. Not the best lens for a photo shoot, but for Hi Def video, I find it works very well. Not the fastest lens but the 7D is so light sensitive that it works well anyway.
It’s funny how with all the excitement of the shallow-depth of field, it’s now becoming well over used just like a new toy. It reminds of when all the special digital effects came out! My advice is don’t over use it.
Best to have a sharp focused picture than an image that’s always in and out of focus because your subject moved half an inch. All the new DSLR users are doing it!So yes, the Canon lens works well as it will keep your picture sharper but still give you more than adequate shallow depth for your creativity and superb imagery.
