I just picked up a t2i and am trying to decide which lens to get for my standard “taking the camera around or doing some kind of videography and don’t want to be constantly changing lenses” lens. First off, I’m a novice when it comes to lenses, I know plenty about f#s, focal lengths, macro, and image stabilization, but don’t have a clue as to what lenses actually have the best image quality. I’ve found a few, most likely I’ll either pick up the kit lens for the 7D (18-200mm f3.5, image stabilization) or sigma’s version of it, but I also found this one

which, frankly, looks like a higher quality lens. Which one best suits my needs and how the hell am I supposed to figure out what will give me the best quality image?

I use the canon one as per your link. It seems to be a good all rounder. Not the best lens for a photo shoot, but for Hi Def video, I find it works very well. Not the fastest lens but the 7D is so light sensitive that it works well anyway.

It’s funny how with all the excitement of the shallow-depth of field, it’s now becoming well over used just like a new toy. It reminds of when all the special digital effects came out! My advice is don’t over use it.
Best to have a sharp focused picture than an image that’s always in and out of focus because your subject moved half an inch. All the new DSLR users are doing it!

So yes, the Canon lens works well as it will keep your picture sharper but still give you more than adequate shallow depth for your creativity and superb imagery.

Hi there, this reference is by no means complete, but it will give you a good primer for which lenses you can use. I like to troll rummage sales and craigslist for lenses and then I make them work with an adapter. I like to goof around with image though, too.
