April 28, 2008 at 5:23 pm in reply to: Can you turn a mask off temporarily?

    Hi,

I might be mistaking, but it looks like this had become a lot more complicated then it should be..

    My ‘simple’ method would be:

    – Place a square mask around the entire layer and leave it on ‘add’ Having a full maks on ‘add’ as the first mask on your layer prevents masks that are set to substract from fading the entire layer.

    – Place a second mask that masks out the billboard (or use your existing one) that will be put on ‘substract’

    – Use a new mask for each car that passes, leave them on ‘add’ start creating them in the middle, outlining the front of the car, simply keyframe and grow them along untill the car is completely covering the frame. Set a new keyframe when te first frame of the car’s backside is in frame and follow and outline the back of the car until it (and the mask) is fully out of frame (needless to say that, at constant speed, this should only have to be 2 or 3 keyframes).
Just leave your mask standing there and create a new one for the next car, because reusing them will add the motion blur junk mentioned above.

Or am I overseeing something here..

    Good luck with it.

February 8, 2008 at 8:50 am in reply to: Using XDCAM EX Quicktimes on non-FCP machines?

    Hi Navarro,

I had the same problem last night: Wanting to render (among others) XDcam materiaal. on an extra machine that has AfterEffects, but not FCP on it. I tried installing the XDcam transcode tool, didn’t work. So I figured that it must be some QT component, tried copying the IMX component and HDV component, but no luck, any other ideas?

…And don’t forget the bitrate has to be 25Mps (SQ)…

Any other setting won’t output through iLink. But why would you want to do that, while you can output faster than realtime using USB, and the simply select and import the takes you like using XDcam transfer..

I’m still not sure why anyone would want to use the fw output, unless you’ve got a shipload of HDV hardware/equipment you want to keep using. In an HD multicam setup with low-cost mixer e.g. I don’t see myself editing “card to tape” in HDV though…

January 9, 2008 at 7:59 am in reply to: XDCAM Transfer 2.1

    Hi Mark,

The trick is to import the folder ‘above’ the BPAV. that is: the folder you’ve copied the BPAV folder into. This way XDcam transfer is thinking it’s importing a ‘mount’ wich is similar to importing directly from the SxS card.

I don’t even have the EX1 or the card around at the moment 🙂 (I did a test with a rental camera, mine is still in backorder.) and I’ve just tried it with my copied footage, works fine.

    Hope this helps you out!

    Hi Bob,

I’ve imported 720, 50p and 1080, 25p this way. All works fine. Please note that I’m using the Sony XDcam transfer utility. The installation of this utility automatically adds the Sony XDcam HD easy setups to your FCP easy setup list. These are needed to setup your FCP for realtime playback of the EX material.

whitepapers on importing via XDcam transfer are found here:

    bssc.sel.sony.com/BroadcastandBusiness/markets/10014/docs/FCP_XDCAMHD_whitepaper.pdf

To mount the SxS cards on a MacBook Pro, you’ll need to install the SxS driver software:

    Good luck!

    Hi Markus,

The routine I’m using is as follows:

    – slide the SxS card into the PcExtreme slot of my MacBook Pro

    – copy the folder named ‘BPAV’ thats on the mounted SxS card into a new folder in the ‘rushes’ folder on my external Backup disk, I use for storing all Rushes. (this is a RAID 1 fomatted double disk Lacie, loosing your sticks’ contents is like burning your tapes..)

    – open XDcam transfer (via Final Cut Pro) and mount the newly copied folder using the ‘add source’ command

    – set in and out and hit the Import button

    – The files are automatically converted to Quicktime and will be placed in the ‘import’ folder you set in the XDCAM transfer preferences.

    – Quit XDcam transfer or aplle-tab to FCP and your media is already imported in your logging bin.

As far as I know it’s not possible to use the firewire output as a data transfer port. This will only output HDV realtime playout streams. It should be possible to output data via the USB output, using the camera as a really expensive card-reader. If you don’t have a MacBook Pro at hand, Sony produces small USB card readers for the SxS media.

    Good luck!

January 7, 2008 at 9:14 am in reply to: A few bits about EX1 shutter, blurs and transfer

    Hi Mark,

As for your point 4-, not beeing able to copy the footage to a laptop computer and import it: This works fine as long as you leave the structure of the folder including the name intact. try copying the folder named ‘BPAV’ that’s on the SxS into a new empty folder with chosen name. Now you should be able to import that folder into the clipbrowser using the ‘open containing folder’ command.

I personally prefer Sony’s XDCAM transfer utility for ingest, because it gives you more logging options, and has less of the ‘fisherprice-look’ the EX clipbrowser has 🙂 The described routine works fine in this application too.

Why not simply import in QT using the “open image secquence” option under ‘file’ Render the imageseq to a QT with codec of choice to maintain realtime playback.

    just my 2cts.

July 12, 2007 at 6:09 am in reply to: Motion only using 1 processor?

Hi Adrian, thanx! That’s a disturbing message there, to say the least.. It feels odd, having all this processorpower built into your new product and at the same time, having your most processor-intensive app not up to speed to cope with all this power.

It’s like designing a muscle car but mounting the accelerator pedal in a such a position that it only goes halfway (or 1/8th way, to exact).

I guess it “hoping for updates – time” again then. I guess motion 3.2 will be an update that will blow us all away…

come think of it.. On all those demo’s I’ve seen Motion running like clockwork, even in HD, that might just be special Demo versions that DO use all the processors 🙂 I’m sure I’ll be checking the processor stats on the Apple-stand at the next IBC conference..

Anyone else has an idea about this?

Hi again, tried activating the processors for Compressor in Qmanager. This doesn’t have any effect on the render. still only 1 processor that’s working really well..

For now it’s just a matter of patience I think..

    thanks though 🙂
