You need to compress with the ‘RGB’ option selected. The result may look washed out on a computer monitor, as the result will (and should) be Rec709.
Fast Import into Avid with the 709 option selected. Open the CC tool in Avid and look at the waveform monitor. It will show the right levels. Hook up a calibrated video monitor to judge the look.

Well, for long-form, transcoding would seem highly recommended IMHO. Working with native H264 over AMA is very taxing on the system.

Actually, I don’t think they’ve been making a big deal out of the ‘last 32-bit version’. It’s been mentioned, not listed as a feature, not brought forward as a big announcement. A straight – but not very surprising – answer to a simple question.
I do wish they would share more info with their customers. However, they have been bitten by that in the past. Remember the uncompressed HD option for Adrenaline (with an add-on board) that was big news some NAB’s ago? Vaporware, it turned out.
So if they announce support for specific 3rd party hardware, or 2K/4K, or what not, and then can’t deliver at the time of release, how would that look? -
IIRC, they did not announce this as a future feature. The official statement, when asked, was: 5.5 is the last 32-bit release. I’m no lawyer but that’s hardly a surprising comment on a future release. Everyone knows 64-bit is coming. They’re not saying when it is coming. If you look at the current product release cycle, it may occur sometime in Q4, I guess.
5.5 may very well be a release that Symphony owners had better skip.

I think it’s a good thing Terry’s spreading the news. There was some talk about this initially, but the information seems to have been buried a bit. It’s important folks know, so they may plan this year’s purchases.

Never mind the levels in the Avid. You should calibrate your room to -85dB and create your mix, with peak levels not clipping in the digital domain.

Two more thoughts:
You can also use a picture viewer application, hit Copy, then go into the Title Tool and hit paste.
In versions prior to MC5, you could also flip the project to HD, import, and flip the project format back to SD. That would also maintain the right aspect ratio, IIRC.
