I have never had that happen. I have never seen a checkbox asking me to delete project files. I have always backed up my projects before upgrading, but have never ever needed to put them back, as the installers always left them where they were. Seems to me like your IT guy did this manually.

I think you can still do OMF, if you set the Media Creation settings appropriately. But indeed, Meridien in MXF is also possible.

I’ve always understood a stringout to be a selection of shots/segments that are meant as the base for a scene. Something that a content editor for reality TV might create, and then send it off to an editor that will actually create a proper scene, trimming cuts, adding sound/music, filling in blanks, covering visible cuts in interviews, that kind of stugg.

I also use the term for sequences with rough selects that I may gather when browsing through documentary-style footage, which I intend to later use as a source sequence.

But that may just be me.

Even that is not necessary. If a source file is suited for Fast Import, no matter the destination resolution you choose, MC will ask you wether or not it should preserve the resolution of the source file(s). If you tell it to preserve the source file’s resolution, it will Fast Import.

BTW: you should not need to install any AMA plugins, as the QT plugin is the only one that comes bundled with the standard install.

If QT can play back the file, AMA should too, since it just looks at whatever QT player is sending into its pipeline.

There were some issues with APR QT through AMA. But more importantly: do not AMA then transcode, but do a Fast Import. Meaning that if your sources have the same dimensions and framerate as your project, and you select File-Import and choose ‘709’ for the luma levels, you can fast import the APR from Quicktime to MXF.

Upon export, do NOT manually select an export to ProRes (as this will cause the infamous QT gamma shifts), but rather export Same As Source. Much cleaner workflows.

If you have Boris Continuum Complete, then you can use the UpRez filter in there. Much nicer for blowups than traditional Avid scaling.

To use it, import the SD into an HD project with the setting to not resize smaller images. This will give you a small, slightly squeezed SD frame inside a black canvas. Add Boris UpReze, set the source to NTSC SD, the destination to 1920×1080 HD, and choose a scaler type (Magic Smooth or Magic Sharp often do the trick for me).

If any issues were to arise, you should be able to right-click your sequence in v6.5 and choose “Revert Effects”, which would duplicate your sequence and strip that duplicate of any effects types that would be incompatible with earlier versions of the software.
