It works with most any codec you have installed. I have been editing HD with it for the last three years. Is there an OS beyond Yosemite? I’m using FCPX myself, but Media 100 is so direct and easy to use, I often find myself booting it up first. I have a feeling you’ve never used version 2.1.5 or the Yosemite compatible 2.1.6. Probably not even version 2.x. I’m happy to have another choice of a track based editor other than Adobe or Avid.

Yosemite compatibility certainly does. Real promotion (finally) of a great, easy to use system with professional capabilities does as well. Should have happened long ago. Red included, works with M100 and other major NLE’s. Media 100 is one of the NLE’s I use. And I don’t rent any of them! Adobe has gotten my last dime until they offer perpetual licenses.CS6? Hardly use it now. FCPX and M100. Media 100’s Yosemite support gives me confidence to do more projects with it. Check out media100.com for the new approach.

Thanks, Floh. See any issues with other software? 10.10.3 and especially Photos has people very angry on the Mac App Store 10.10.3 Download Comments section. They really seem to hate Photos, and I hope it has no interaction with my Aperture 3.6 installation.

Tony, Aperture is way more than a Photoshop stand in. It has the best DAM (Digital Asset Manager) of any of the photo centric programs. Plus the well thought out interface that is an Apple hallmark. Not separate modules you have to jump between to do necessary adjustment and management, etc. I do as much photography as video, and I am loathe to think of moving to LightRoom, which has literally half the capability of Aperture when it comes to photo management and organization. It is not just a bunch of folders primarily organized in the Finder that show up that way in LR. Aperture can also use that external management model, but it has a Library system that is far more powerful than LR. I have terabytes of photos in them, and also in separate backup folders that I could move to a non Library system if necessary. But I really don’t want to.

Will keep running Aperture as long as possible, for many years with my current Mac Pro 2012 (10.6.8 to Yosemite boots) and nMP 2013. With LR you have to export JPGS (poor subsequent editing and heavier compression) or TIFFs (huge also with poor editing) just to get them into LR from Aperture with any RAW Adjustments. Photos is supposed to import directly with adjustments intact. We will see on that. Capture One is looking like a better alternative to LR for Pro Aperture users, as they are implementing a direct import of RAW Aperture Libraries that maintain as much of the characteristics of adjustment and metadata as possible. Many call C1 the best RAW converter in the business, though I haven’t found anything to equal Nikon Capture NX2 for my Nikon cameras. Even after import to C1 the Aperture Library is still usable. And as the Libraries are directly importable to Photos, I may do some editing and organization there if I like it. Especially as improvements are added in subsequent releases.

As far as FCPX going away, not a chance. It is selling extremely well and selling Macs. More people moving to it every day and avoiding the Adobe rental trap. A no brainer. It is working very well for my needs, better than Premiere. At least they pay more attention to Macs than PCs.

You CAN store your photos off line (local storage) or in iCloud. iCloud is not required. If you use iCloud, all of your devices will automatically sync to the latest accepted edit in Photos. That is the main advantage of iCloud usage. Not a great model for large RAW images, but for jpgs it could be an advantage as you do not have to manually sync your iPad, MacBook, or iPhone versions. Very good for showing portfolios, targeted projects, etc., no matter which device you have with you.

But you do NOT have to use iCloud for storage if you don’t want. I have several Aperture managed Libraries, one is 750GB. That would not be practical to load to iCloud, obviously. I will definitely be giving Photos a try, but will also keep a system or two for Aperture well into the future. It’s DAM is far superior to any other, and it works the way I think, no jumping between modules as with LightRoom.

BTW, Aperture will be supported at least through Yosemite, and is continuing to be sold at this time. I have versions of it running on 10.6.8 through latest Mavericks, will be adding a Yosemite boot drive to my 2012 MacPro for the 3.6 latest version of Aperture probably this week. Will upgrade that drive to Yosemite 10.10.3 that will include Photos when Photos is released, supposedly April, certainly before summer. I think that should hold me for a while. Also take a look look at Capture One by Phase One, it will have much better import of Aperture Libraries than LightRoom, and will allow you to still keep your Aperture Libraries intact and usable.

Absolutely true, Andrew. But for me, since I’m all Mac, it is software vs. software, so I guess you could say Apple/Adobe vs Apple/Apple. If you have a good Mac (in my case new Mac Pro) it is a direct comparison. There is a big advantage in many respects besides pricing to having the same company able to integrate the marriage of hardware and software.

I will also agree with those that say there is a great virtue in having competition. With CC rental, at least in my case, and I imagine many others, Adobe doesn’t measure up, as much as I would like to have their offerings beyond CS6 in my toolkit. I was already using CS6 looking forward to the next upgrade. Then rental only was dropped. So CS6 will have to do until they offer an off ramp or rent/purchase model. The threat of inaccessible projects as an incentive to use their software doesn’t make it for me. In other words the specter of “burned boats”. YMMV.

Thanks for your response Dennis. I have to point out that FCPX has evolved into a professional level application in the time since 10.0 was introduced and I have not had to pay a single dime extra for the improvements, which I am positive will continue. This was for the cost of CC for 6 months at normal pricing. I was rather taken aback at the interface changes at first myself, and this was what convinced me to move to Premiere CS6. I was just getting to the point that I was feeling comfortable with it when it was announced that beyond the current version it would only be available by rental, with projects becoming inaccessible without monthly payment ad infinitum. It didn’t take me and many others long to realize we were being put in a box we couldn’t get out of if we committed to CC. That was just unacceptable for my situation.

Since that time I have become proficient with FCPX and realized it’s many advantages. It more than meets my needs, and in fact, makes my work freer, faster, and more creative. It is far more cost effective than CC. I’m spending much more time reading the FCP forums and buying training for FCPX. If I really need FCP 7, I have it running on all my current machines. It is great at tape capture, for instance.

Perhaps if Adobe comes up with the often suggested off ramp whereby a user could pay a fee or commit to a minimum period of rental to lock into their current version of CC it might be bearable. This would allow a user to continue to work on their projects without being tied in perpetuity to monthly payments. They could then be sure of maintaining access to their work. That, in my mind might be a way to justify the CC program. I would only want the video related apps plus Photoshop anyway. My CS6 will fulfill my Adobe needs for many years with my current hardware strategy if no new approach materializes.

CC, as it stands, to be seems quite one sided in it’s advantage to Adobe vs. the user. The current plan reminds me of being “shipwrecked” on the Adobe “island”. That was why “burning the boats” struck such a raw nerve with David and myself when I read his posted quotes from your CFO . How could you not help but think of that image? If I were Adobe, I would keep the CFO as far away from the press as possible. He isn’t doing your public relations any favors. I’ve used Photoshop since the first version, and much other Adobe software. But no one company is indispensable. Hope you can come up with a better model.

Re the 12 million vs 3 million, you can see it in their income statements over the last several years. Large drop after CC. I posted the chart on the “grumpy site”. It is about in that proportion. It will take a couple of years to see if they made the right decision.
