Thanks for your insight, Jeremy. I’m taking to FCPX quite well, and honestly, as my work at this point is entirely documentary, boiling down footage from dozens of tapes over the years, it is great for these projects. I’m using FCP Legacy as digitizer as it is best suited for tape capture. I’m only using Motion for titles and transitions. No need for AE. Certainly not Premiere on a “pay as you go, forget about it if you don’t” basis. I have one client that pays the bills and their objective is to make something out of historic cultural footage that they, and I have a great interest in preserving.

Just thought the “burn the boats” attitude of the Adobe CFO was a bit shocking, considering the number of people they are leaving stranded. My opinion is that Apple, though they certainly changed the paradigm, is not forcing anyone to go into rental mode. I don’t have to submit to having my “boat” burned. I can still use FCP Legacy as an important part of these projects because I “own” it. Still works on my 2012 Mac Pro and so far as I can tell, on my new Tube. Also both programs are paid for and suitable for me, as I am obviously committed to the Mac.

Still think the Adobe model has more to do with the stock price than the users, the 1/4 that are left, many not “Full Boat” with a lot of $10/month photo users. Check out the conversation on the “grumpy” forum. No one over there is biting anyone. BTW, I still most enjoy this forum for it’s preponderance of positive exchange of viewpoints. “Grumpy” is rather focused on the problems many of us have with Adobe. Not always so positive, but I think necessary. This one is a free form conversation about what we all love. Media creation. Not so much finance and business models.

Just to give some context to the “look in the mirror” quote by Adobe’s CFO posted on the “grumpy” board, I will quote the post that started the hoo-ha over there. My thanks to David Miller for finding and posting this:

I hope he continues to look at himself in the mirror as many of their former customers walk away to some other option.

The 3 million or so that they have captured into CC so far are likely the “low hanging fruit” of their customer base…the ones most likely to join. The remaining 75% or so (Adobe apparently has around 12 million customers) may prove a lot harder to persuade.

Will be interesting to see, I’m sure.

LaCie definitely had some power supply problems and was replacing a lot of the D2 external PS units. I’ve never had a problem, though I have several, some 250 and 500GB that must be 5 years old. Now used just for backup though. Get mostly drives through OWC, Hitachi, now HGST and Toshiba. Some HGST failures.

I’m old enough to be “grumpy”, but I thought the entire video was fantastic, and especially liked the use of effects. The control of speed changes was especially well done as well as the perfect matching of shots that was made much easier by the organizational capabilities of FCPX. Great piece of work and a real example of what FCPX is capable of. Kudos to Leonardo Dalessandri!

You can also convert the FCS disks to .cdr format using Disk Utility. Mount the disks one by one. Open Disk Utility for each. Select the disk in the Disk Utility sidebar and click on “New Image” at the top. At the bottom on “Image Format” pop-up select “DVD/CD master” and click Create. When opened these will behave exactly like a mounted DVD or CD. I made .cdr s out of all of the Final Cut Studio disks, and all of my important application disks. This will also allow you to install your applications on new Macs that no longer have DVD drives such as my late 2013 Mac Pro or the latest MacBook Pros and Airs. DVD’s and CD’s do fail after a period of time or can be damaged as well, so this is also a convenient back up.

Disk Utility will also convert .dmg s to .cdr s if you wish. Select the .dmg file in the DU sidebar and use the “Convert” command next to the “New Image” at the top menu of DU.Then New Image and DVD/CD master from the popup as before.

Really the only reason I’m using FCP 7 still is it’s excellent tape input support. I have over 30 years of archives to deal with. From there I move the ProRes to FCPX or even Media 100 2.1.5 (much less so now) Bought CS4-CS6 Production Premium before the CC bomb and used and liked it. However, Creative Cloud rental is not in my future.

The problem obviously comes when you need a new computer pre-loaded with Yosemite or later, or you need other software that won’t run on the older OS. From my point of view the annual updates of OSX is getting to be a bit of a pain. One reason I bought a new 2012 Mac Pro tower before they disappeared. Have 3 boot drives in it and will be adding a Yosemite drive or partition soon for some other software that needs it. Whether it will work with OS’s after Yosemite is open to question. Also have a Late 2013 new Mac Pro that I am keeping on Mavericks until I have to move, or add a partition or two for dual or triple boot to the 1TB SSD. Definitely a hassle.

Andy Edwards on the Adobe CC the Debate forum reports that it solved the bad video playback problem he was having, I assume on Premiere and a nMP. Don’t think anything like that was reported on FCP X. Good to know, will be looking for more reports. Have avoided 10.9.3.
