    Hi Kevin,

I’m not using Dynamic Link – just straight ‘import premiere pro project’ into AE.

BTW – I’m using Production Premium.

    Thnx,
    James.

February 2, 2011 at 5:45 pm in reply to: Decklink HD Extreme 3D+ ‘capture device offline’

Anyone got any thoughts on this!?

Getting a bit desperate – resorted to using firewire cable to control the deck while I capture through HD-SDI, but the control is very laggy and inaccurate and I’m having to put gargantuan handles on any clips I capture due to really bad picture break up as the deck winds up to start rolling. Deck is a Sony J-H3 hire unit and no faults reported on previous hire.

Help if you can BMD guys!

    Thanks,
    Jim.

    Hi Michael,

Thanks for your reply. It definitely behaves differently when I move the camera via the null rig, as opposed to the camera itself. Didn’t realize Z-pos had no affect on the Horizon layer (perhaps it should partially?) but my problem is if I want to track the camera left or right, or up/down the horizon BG doesn’t move at all, whereas my particular stars, etc do move with the camera..

Quick fix at the moment is to make sure I tilt the camera as I track, ever so slightly – which gets the BG moving a touch and looks more realistic, but not ideal.

January 14, 2011 at 3:17 pm in reply to: Constant crashes & losing preview files on re-launch

    Hi Eric,

Thanks for the reply, but unfortunately I’m doing any of that stuff (only using 1080p XDCAM HD422 quicktimes) . I did open one of the auto-save projs after a crash the other day, but then re-saved it back into my main project folder before starting anymore work on it. These ‘broken’ preview files aren’t saving inside my auto-save folder though, but rather inside the main preview files folder, in a new preview files folder.

I won’t be working on it over the weekend, so if I dump ALL the preview files and then re-render it all from scratch do you think that will remedy it, or are there any other tricks I could try?

Would love to, but £320 just for smooth playback is a bit steep! 🙁

    Doesn’t bode well then!

Why can’t Adobe and Apple just play nice and get this silly little problem sorted out! Surely there’s enough room for PPro and FCP in the desktop edit arena!? Plus if Apple are trying to sell more hardware (which I’m sure they are), then giving hardc0re Adobe followers a solid platform to switch to and be flexible with FCP seems a no brainer to me.

    How I digress….

    Any tips Vince!?

Alex – thanks again. Will do some tests in the morning on those suggestions and all being well I can crack on a get logging!

Last thing – anyone got any ideas for a better quality codec (but still relatively lightweight – as per ProRes) I could transcode to instead of XDCAM HD422? If I can get similar quality to ProRes, but running smooth in PPro CS4 on a mac….then I won’t even need to worry about relink to high-res later!

    Thanks again all.

January 5, 2011 at 6:15 pm in reply to: Subclip name lost when replacing footage

    Hi Alex,

Thanks for your help. I’m doing all this before I start the project, to avoid a workflow nightmare further down the line, so just want to get this bulletproof before moving forward…

Will try the media path sorting thing – although when I come to do this all the subclips will be different bins depending on type (bins not necessarily relating to each original master clip – the subs within each master are all diff, so will be mixed up into different bins…if that makes sense!?) so basically, although this does sound like a workaround – it will take a while to do for each bin.

EDIT: Just looked in my project bin (CS4) and no field showing media path, which is odd! No right click, etc will bring up more fields and tabbed it fullscreen – GONE!?! Any ideas?

As for the renaming of subclip – I found problem with that – there is a check box on import dialog where you can switch this off, so that’s cool.

However, if I do what you suggested: offline subs > select all > relink to new source file – then the subclips then cease to be subclips, is that correct? When I’ve done it in the past it then changes into a master clip once relinked or ‘replace footag-ed’.

Reason why I’m doing this is simply because CS4 is a total bag of **** with ProRes, so having to transcode to XDCAM so I can preview & edit in realtime, do the edit, then replace with original higher quality ProRes footage before rendering. Bit of a pain, but I’ve tried everything else! Can’t find another codec that looks as good as ProRes and will playback 1 x 1080p stream in realtime. Uncompressed HD is out of the question and can’t afford investing in Cineform. XDCAM HD422 looks pretty good, but introduces artifacts (and gamma shifts) even with that, so need to resort back to ProRes for final VFX/Grading ideally.

Also, before I go too far with this – is there a known problem with Dynamic Link to/from AE with subclips? DL is the main reason I’ve chosen Premiere as my NLE for this project, so want to be sure I don’t get stung further down the line!

    Thanks again for any pointers!
    J.

    Hi Steve,

Thanks for the reply. I wish I understood all that you just said, but I’m afraid I don’t! Is there a less techie way of explaining that and any way to solve it?

Tried to converting to an XDCAM HD422 .mov (exporting via QTPro) which is playing better in PPro, but still a bit choppy. Used this codec straight of the camera plenty (as mxf/mp4) which works a treat, but is it because of QT wrapper it’s not playing ball?
