  • Knackers…so doing anything interlaced is going to yield results in twice the amount of time to progressive then? That gives even more of an arguement to shoot everything in 25p!

I’d not really thought about it before – I do mostly gfx-based work that lays over interlaced footage with alpha in a separate NLE. I always render gfx progressive.

Treating interlaced footage directly in AE, it seems, is a very slow process then. Oh dear. Either that or trying to deinterlace and combine fields for any footage that comes in and put it all out progressive..again, another very time consuming process. Plus I guess it won’t match any other shots that it’s up against if they are fielded…

    Any other work arounds guys?

July 5, 2007 at 11:37 am in reply to: 4GB RAM with Decklink & PPro2?

    Hi Harm,

Yeah – I see your point, but I don’t need quite that much RAM! 16-32GB for Apter Effects, etc really. Apparently Nucleo Pro plays best with 2-4GB per core and Boxx reckon x64 will be fine for that. Don’t know how much memory/procs Premiere can utilise?…But I guess it’d mean I’d need my main apps on the 64 machine and maybe network it with an XP32 machine for all my other cr@p!?!

We might be getting a Smoke on Linux as our main editor, but my machine would need to be on Windows or Mac for my Adobe apps. Are Adobe thinking of developing for Linux btw?

Thanks for the suggestion Harm, but that doesn’t really help me with Adobe! Unless I want to switch to Eyeon Fusion, Shake or get a Flame (not an option!) plus all the other apps I mention don’t have a Linux option either..

Or were you just having a little dig at Windows in general!?

July 4, 2007 at 12:42 pm in reply to: What are your Favourite Pulgins?

Don’t have any Pulgins 😉 But plug I now cannot do without are Trapcode Shine, 3D stroke, Particular and Knoll Light Factory. Mainly because alot of what I do is cheesy gfx and our clients love a bit of Shine and flares on their text. They are all proper useful for plenty of other stuff too though.

Plugins I could really do with? NUCLEO PRO, ZAXWERKS PROANIMATOR & LAYER WARPS….as soon as I get the go ahead for some cash they will all be mine, oh yes.

AE cannot natively bend layers in 3D space…it sounds like to do what you need to do you’ll need a plugin, or use Eyeon Fusion or 3D app if you have them. To do in AE I believe Zaxwerks Layer Warps plugin can do this for you. Also Digital Anarchy have something similar – not sure which is best..but as soon as I can I’m trying both out!

July 3, 2007 at 8:42 pm in reply to: 4GB RAM with Decklink & PPro2?

If I’m honest, my machine isn’t really an edit machine..I do mainly GFX/VFX and use PPro2 a tiny bit to capture/playout & encoding and a little bit of simple editing. I have quite a few diff apps on my machine for various GFX tasks, so not sure how well the switch would work. I do know that I could do with more RAM in After Effects, but I need internet/network and these other apps on the same machine aswell to keep my workflow fluid. Does it sound like 3GB/switch a bad idea then?

I want to eventually go XP64 and tonnes of RAM when I get my quad or octo-core machine for when we go HD, but I’m still hearing badness about that too! Vista is a pile of bile for pro apps aswell apparently – how do I get more memory with compromising stability!?

    Is mac a better option?

July 3, 2007 at 8:34 pm in reply to: animating tentacles out of text?

Cheers for ideas guys, but looks like the 2d stroke thing is working prety well – I’m using one layer with multiple masks for each letter, then duplicating that layer and re-positioning them and then sliding the keyframes about a bit to randomise it. Took a while, but works pretty well. I’m sure there’s some time-saving way of randomizing mask shape wiggle with expressions, but I’m rubbish with expressions!

July 3, 2007 at 8:31 pm in reply to: Broadcast Safe Adjustment Layer

Put an adjustment layer on the top of your final render comp and apply levels and set blacks to 16 and whites to 235 (not 236!) Also check colour saturation – try broadcast safe colours effect to see if it keys out any illegal colours.

Ouch…not too sure about 3GB switch..I’ve heard some horror stories. Do you need that enabled to make Decklink work properly w/4GB? I’m maxing the RAM so that Nucleo can use it all in After Effects and also for having several apps open at once.

What are your experiences with 3GB switch? Some says it works fine, others say it made their system really unstable..?
