    Hi,

Does anyone have any neat tricks whereby you could semi-automate/randomise the shape of several masks with 3D stroke attached?

I have a logo need to recreate that is basically a word with half a dozen or so ‘tentacles’ growing out and wiggling from each letter. I’ve started to draw and animate one letter by hand using several instances of 3D stroke on a solid layer as the fill and I’m animating the masks for the ‘wiggle’…but I just wondered if there was a quicker way or a plugin I am missing that could do this relatively easily/quickly? Obviously it will take me AGES to do this for several letters and animate 5 or seconds worth!

    Thanks for any suggestions..

you may be able to do it with displacement maps. you would need to break up the tentacles on different layers and apply different maps, but it won’t be as clean as masks and stroke.

you might try just creating one tentacle that animates (possibly looping?). then duplicate that and offset the time or use time remap to change the timing so the tentacle seem to move independently.

This might not be of help for you at this moment but Puppet Tool in CS3 would be perfect for this. You could generate 1 tentacle, add puppet points, duplicate it as many times as you need it and parent it to the letter. Then animate each tentacle individually.

Cheers for ideas guys, but looks like the 2d stroke thing is working prety well – I’m using one layer with multiple masks for each letter, then duplicating that layer and re-positioning them and then sliding the keyframes about a bit to randomise it. Took a while, but works pretty well. I’m sure there’s some time-saving way of randomizing mask shape wiggle with expressions, but I’m rubbish with expressions!
