Yes but you still have to activate/register it direct with Adobe, and if you can’t prove you’re part of an accredited college, university or school then I don’t think they’ll let you use it.

    Best check it out first.

Ahhh…so the shrunk comp window only works in conjunction with reduced resolution? I know about setting it to half, etc. But I got the impression reducing comp window’s PHYSICAL size sped things up aswell…or have I got my wires crossed?

I appreciate I’m still on a single proc computer (albeit a resonably fast one), but I’m only working on shortform projects in SD at present and some stuff is stupidly slow.

An 8-core beast with 16GB or RAM for SD would be amazing…but I imagine by the time my miser of a boss gets round to ok’ing that we’ll be doing mostly HD anyway!

    Such is life.

Honestly though, reducing my comp window did nothing to preview speeds. Have I done something wrong!? Is there a trci to it I don’t know about? I could do with grabbing every spare second at the moment!

Malcolm, shutting down your computer and leaving it off a couple of minutes can sometimes work when just a plain restart doesn’t…something about it holding something in cache until it is totally powered down for a while. It’s worked for me in the past. Don’t ask me how it works though!

As for the comp window resize…doesn’t seem to make any difference for me having it at 100% or 1.5%.

Anyone else seeing any difference for this in AE7?

Just save a version 2 of the psd file (or rather call the original version filename_BACKUP’) in photoshop and then on the new one group and then merge each text layer (quick way is cntl+G, cntl+E) but make sure all the layers have the same names as the originals.

Then open up AE and reload footage and it should work. Then at least you have an editble version saved incase you need to alter the text. Alternatively you could group each text layer as a smart object instead and then that should import into AE merged.

Have fun – I can’t wait to get CS3 so I don’t have to mess about with all this awkward timewasting anymore!

I never thought of reducing the comp window size – does this really work? I’m still getting a full res preivew out of my decklink card to view previews, so this shouldn’t be affected should it?

    Hi Moldy,

I ended up just dropping the un interpretted footage into a 25fps comp. It stayed the same length, but was a bit jerky. I was in a bit of a rush on this one and the client couldn’t tell the difference (they rarely do, even if you’ve spent hours on something!)

However, looking back at it – I looked at the original QT mov’s proprties in Qucktime – it said it was 14.? fps (sorry at home and can’t remember exact number) yet in AE it said it was 30.303 fps (?!?) I know QT usually lies about such things, but this may explain the 1.42 > 56 secs thing.

I still don’t understand why the timewapr thing was taking so long just to render one frame! It hung for almost a minute per frame when set to pixel motion. Odd.

[moldyboot] “additionally, i would spend money on more ram than a better graphics card, particularly if you invest in cs3 or nucleo pro for ae7 (the recomendation is 2gb per processor for multiprocessing).”

Agreed, that said – you will only be able to use 3-3.5 GB RAM on XP Professional (if you have the full 4GB installed) Go for Vista (though not sure if it’s ready yet) or Windows x64 if you’re cramming it full of RAM.

Apparently 4D is the best fit with AE and relatively intuitive to learn. Not used it myself, but I’ve read lots of discussions on it here…
