when I took the captured file and sent it via FTP to a client he couldn’t open it because it had a document extension. I didn’t even notice it was not a .mov extension. I just told him to rename it with .mov extension and it would play. Why didn’t FCP capture with a .mov extensiion and will I have to rename all the captured files that I FTP in the future? I sure hope not.

July 25, 2010 at 11:40 pm in reply to: Does anyone use a MacBookPro as their only editing computer?I use an Iomega eSATA drive with my MBP 17in. I use the Sonnet Tempo card (cheaper of the two versions). No problems yet here.
I will say one thing for the Macpro vs. MBP – with the latter I’m constantly switching between the eSata card, the firewire express card (to capture from tape), card reader, etc. A pain at times. Nice to have all the wires connected without messing with them anymore! Also, the MBP screen needs to be bigger if you’re at the highest resolution. Print is too small for my eyes. Drop to a lower res and it just doesn’t look as good.

sometimes when I’m looking for a new system I start with a price and after digging find out I can get a more capable system for a little bit more – and buy it. So I provide it.

wait for the new MacPros to come out. Very possible they will be using the I7 980 extreme “Gulftown” chip at 3.3Ghz. Load up the RAM DDR3, I like the solid state system drive personally, get a good graphic card, and RAID two or more fast drives.

My source file is an m2t file and the client wants it in apple pro res hq. I was thinking of outputting to miniDV tape (from the m2t) and copying into FCP. Last time I checked compressor would not convert an m2t file. The m2t file is made up of stock footage from over 100 tapes and would be very time consuming to find those individual clips that make up the m2t file. Do you know a way to get compressor to ingest the m2t file?

Ah, so that’s why I don’t see the full “log and capture” window. I suppose I could always drop the files onto the timeline and export out as a single pro res file? Will that work? Thanks for your help.

Just for reference: I’m using a 17 inch Macbook Pro I7 2.66 GHZ with a solid state hard drive, 8GB Ram, and video on an external Iomega hard drive connected via esata card to the express card slot. I can drop Canon 5D2 Mov files on the timeline and they play fine w/o transcoding.
