I’m using FCP 7 and when I click on File>Log and Capture, I get a little window called “HDV Capture” asking for the file name, and a little button that says “capture”. I don’t see any logging window like in the manual where you can select to capture from tape to a single file and not multiple files like it’s doing now. How do I pull up the log and capture window like in the manual p. 39.

If you choose the CAPTURE HDV AS PRORES option. When you do that, you can’t log and capture…you can only capture the full tape, and FCP will break up the footage into clips for every start and stop of the camera.

Ah, so that’s why I don’t see the full “log and capture” window. I suppose I could always drop the files onto the timeline and export out as a single pro res file? Will that work? Thanks for your help.

Yeah, that would work…but for what? You would then be lacking any timecode reference to the original tape and adding a generation of compression. Why do that?

My source file is an m2t file and the client wants it in apple pro res hq. I was thinking of outputting to miniDV tape (from the m2t) and copying into FCP. Last time I checked compressor would not convert an m2t file. The m2t file is made up of stock footage from over 100 tapes and would be very time consuming to find those individual clips that make up the m2t file. Do you know a way to get compressor to ingest the m2t file?

Ahhh…FCP doesn’t deal with that format. You need to get CLIPWRAP ($49) and that will encode directly to ProRes.
