Hi David,
Thanks again for your advice.
Newegg looks great.
Hard to believe how much 4 gig Avid drives used to cost…

July 25, 2007 at 1:57 am in reply to: G5 Down! – Folder with question mark on startup – Help?!Update:
Tried starting up from system disk and repairing drive in disk utility – it didn’t recognize the volume – would have had to erase.
Tried removing the new RAM and starting from system disk – same result in disk utility.
It’s certainly possible that my 3 plus year-old internal hard drive decided to call it quits a day after I gave it some new RAM…
But I find that quite a coincidence…
Thoughts?
Vendors for replacement drives on the net? In LA?
Things I’m not thinking of?

Hi Fred,
A while back I was having trouble getting After Effects to render an end crawl in HD uncompressed (3 minutes in length) so I used Photo shop to create a giant TIFF file of the entire scroll top to bottom, then took that in to After Effects to scroll down.
Quality was unaffected.
Hope that’s of some use.
Cheers,
Jim

July 25, 2007 at 1:25 am in reply to: G5 Down! – Folder with question mark on startup – Help?!Hi Charlie,
Thanks for chiming in.
I tried starting up from the CD with the new RAM in and it’s not even able to verify or repair the hard drive – which it’s not even seeing the name for- just comes up with an error off the bat..
Do you think I still should try with old RAM only?
I’ll give it a shot.
But curious if you think the RAM would affect the computer’s ability to see the hard drive.
Appreciate your help.

Hi David,
Thanks for your response… though I’m now out 300 clams!
Put in an order at crucial.com for 4 GB of RAM.
I just hope my CPU keeps chugging along – it was a bit of a toss up on whether to just upgrade my whole system at this point but I figure my current G5 could make an excellent logging/digitizing station someday.
I look forward to your article.
thanks again.
Cheers,

Hi David,
Just curious whether you have heard anything new about the reconnect issues in FCP 6.
I am just about to start a project with FCP 6 that will involve 2 sets of the same media – one in LA – one in Ireland – emailing projects back and forth in order to see each other’s work…
This is a large documentary so the idea of having to reconnect file by file to link someone else’s project to my media is terrifying…
Any news?
Any reply from Apple?
Workarounds?
Keep me posted.
Cheers,
Jim

Hi guys,
Thanks for the response.
Went and did some further research and you’re both right.
Don’t need to convert voltage as the power supply already does that.
Just need two funny looking plugs.
I owe you pints.

Hi Kathryn,
I seem to be having the same problem you had when trying to capture footage from a camera.
I usually get one or 2 clips done and then I start getting the error of something to the tune of this command could not be completed because”there is no video”. It’s of course ridiculous because the computer is happily controlling the camera and it will give this message before and after working perfectly normally.
Thus far the only thing that’s worked has been shutting down the computer and restarting and then it will work for a clip (I’m now doing entire tapes if possible) and then stop working…
Have you found any more info on how to get around this problem?
The response to your post regarding trashing “receipts” is something that worked for me for another separate problem that I recently had because of upgrading my OS. Not sure if it applies to this problem.
Would love to hear any advice you might have to offer.
Cheers,
Jim

Hi Pierre,
I’m still knee deep in things but have gotten some advice from various corners.
Thanks for referring me to Alan. He and I traded emails and there’s a possibility his company might contract to do a shot or 2.
Right now I’m discovering new possibilities in the hardware world and trying to nail down the company we’ll record our negative with and work backwords from there…
Along those lines are you familiar with the Alchemist Box? Ph.C? Platinum? DEFT+?
I’ve been looking into these possibilities vs. the Terranex.
I wish there was something in between the realtime Terranex and the fantastic but very SLOW Twixtor.
I’ll keep the thread updated when I find out more.
Thanks again for your help;
