  • G5 hard drive replacement: brands? specs? vendors?

Posted by Jim Bruce on July 25, 2007 at 3:11 am

    Hi there,

I posted below with a G5 (Power Mac Dual 2.0, 5 GB of RAM – 4 installed yesterday!) that is doing a good impression of needing a new internal hard drive.

I’ve never had to do such a thing.

Are there any specs I should be aware of?

8 MB “buffer” versus 16 MB?

    Compatibility issues?

    Will any SATA do?

Are there better or worse brands? Vendors?

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Cheers,

    Jim

Go to newegg.com where the prices are typically the best anywhere, and get yourself a Hitachi, Seagate, or Maxline SATA. 7200 RPM with a 16mg cache is best. All are great drives and all are very inexpensive now. You can get a 500gb drive for $99 to $120. Even though 500gb may seem large, get one anyway. They are cheap and will be useful to you when the new 64-bit operating system comes to market later in the year.

    Hi David,

    Thanks again for your advice.

    Newegg looks great.

Hard to believe how much 4 gig Avid drives used to cost…

I’ve had very good luck with Hitachi drives. I’m running them in all of my machines and never had any problems. They have a three year warranty to boot.
