Not sure if you have the capability to do this with your card and I’m not sure how your patch work is set-up for SDI, but can you see an output signal coming from Final Cut to the deck with audio and video? If you do, try just playing back your sequence timeline and see if your deck receives the necessary signals. If you do, just try playing back the program from the sequence and just hit play+record on the deck, without having to go through Edit to Tape. Also, try trashing your preferences for Final Cut. Or, you can always try to download AJA VTR Xchange. You can download it for free here.

    https://www.aja.com/en/products/software/

You can stream the file back through through the software and even edit to tape with it.

    Hope this helps.

  • Okay, here is something that Adobe posted regarding .xml exports via Premiere to FCP.

    https://help.adobe.com/en_US/premierepro/cs/using/WS1E3E2208-8384-42fd-822B-8F07F2E5438Fa.html#WScbecf3f614eb38be7a1f773012504357269-8000

But I’m sure you knew that.

I’m not sure how much this will help, but someone posted bak in 2009 about a similar issue in CS4 where then went to open their .xml file in FCP and no clips, sequences, titles, etc., appear. Some people offered solutions.

    Hope this helps.

  • I’m not too sure about this one, but I can tell you, I have tried to do similar things with Premiere 5.5 to FCP 7 by exporting my sequence as .xml and I had the same issue. So you are not alone.

Not that my encounter with the issue solves your current issue.

  • I agree with you as well, Rafael; however, how we have it set-up here, it is more efficient for us to actually use the internal storage from the computer than external hard drives. We have experienced terrible playback issues if we try to keep the original files housed in an external and rely on Firewire and USB for the transfer. You can never trust it and if something becomes ejected in the middle of a transfer or playback, you have to start over. That is the best solution we use here, hence I suggested it. But I guess it is dependent on what is most efficient for the end-user.

  • I think it works either way, honestly. I always emphasize to actually house the footage that you’re editing with on the main hard drive to avoid transfer restrictions via Firewire or USB; however, I think it is whatever is easiest for you and you can tolerate.

If your project is still early on and you want to transfer everything to another hard drive, then I would go ahead and do that and use the “Reconnect Media” option to have FCP reconnect everything. I would think after awhile of reconnecting the media that FCP would start to understand the pattern you are working with to reconnect it.

On the other hand, if you have already started a project, I would also consider leaving it as is and just work off that current hard drive and then hook up another hard drive if you need to for the remaining footage and just base your project off of those two hard drives. Once you have the final product outputted, if you want, then transfer everything to one hard drive.

I would say there isn’t a “right” or “wrong” way for media management such as you are worried about; it is what is most efficient for the editor to create the video and output it in a timely manner. I would keep doing what you are doing and worry about managing it all after you have completed your project since you are under a tight deadline.

June 24, 2012 at 7:57 pm in reply to: ProRes .mov to DVD

I would assume you outputted your ProRes .mov as separate .m2v and .ac3 files? Then made it as a timeline in DVD Studio Pro and made the timeline as your first play? Set it for the necessary region?

    Just assuming.

    June 24, 2012 at 2:33 pm in reply to: Fcp7 & lion

My co-worked had installed Lion on his MBP with FCP7 and he had more issues with it just being slow; however, it seemed like he experienced more problems with using Premiere on Lion than Final Cut.

Do you currently have Snow Leopard on your now defunct laptop? If I may suggest, if you buy a new MBP and your hard drive for your old MBP is still functional, download Carbon Copy Cloner onto the new hard drive that comes with MBP so you can have Snow Leopard. You can avoid Lion altogether. That is, if you currently have Snow Leopard.

I know that once FCPX came out, Apple was going to stop supporting FCP7 and once Lion came out, they were going to stop supporting Snow Leopard at some point. So, the only issue with FCP7 running on Snow Leopard is that, in the near future, if you begin to have issues, you may not be able to get support from Apple.
