Makes sense, but how about this question:
“Transcoding them seems to just create a 1080HD file which has the FrameFlex effect on it but is actually just pushing in on the shot past 100%.
We see the new transcoding option “Apply reformatting/color option” but checking it didn’t seem to force the cropping of the shots per FrameFlex settings.”

Was this your experience? I can’t see a way to force Avid to actually apply the FrameFlex “effect” and bake a cropped clip in DNx175. It just makes a full raster 1080HD file and pushes in on that, which makes it soft. Am I missing a step somewhere?

Being that your footage was shot at 29.97i (presumably PsF, really), why wouldn’t it work for you to edit at that frame rate?
Native camera 29.97i has no cadence, and PsF is basically progressive frames, just split into fields.
Are you saying that iTunes will ONLY accept 29.97i if it’s cross-converted with proper cadence from a 23.98p master?
Unless you need to mix the two frame rates, it seems to me you’d be just fine editing in 2997i.
Converting 7 hours of footage 30->24 is crazy…

Can anyone elaborate on how to actually use the RS-422 port on the Kona 3 card for the Avid on the same system?

I built a dual-boot Mac Pro system with Avid and FCP on separate drives. Do I need to install Kona 3 drivers on the Avid drive in order to see Kona’s RS422 port? Do I have to set it up as a serial port in the Network Preferences?

I also tried the Keyspan 19HS, but it didn’t work. I am still unclear on whether or not the Rosetta Stone cable is needed or not on a Mac.

Here is my tech info:
Quad Core 2.66 Mac Pro, OS X 10.5.8, Mojo DX, Avid MC 3.5, Kona 3

I am familiar with that technique, but I’m trying to use the fab Sky functionality I saw in the tutorials, being able to set the time, location, animate clouds, etc.
Is that a separate plugin that needs to maybe be separately installed?

PCNation.com has the 24″ HD-SDI model for $3300, and the 20″ HD-SDI model for under $2,500.
I have two 20″ ones and I’m really happy with them. Will probably get a couple of the 24″ ones when the 1080p HD work picks up more.

Thanks for all your responses guys. I guess I was wrong (or read something wrongly written) about the 1500 being able to record mini DV. On to devising the plan B… 🙂
