I mean is it a good colour for computer videos? Or is a nearby colour better? It’s not an aesthetic discussion.

    Thanks both.

So Dave, imagine that you have a simple frame that is the white words “TEXT” on a solid background. Only you decide that it would look great with a certain turquoise background. You even know the hex for it. So what do you do? Do you use that turquoise? Or do convert it to some other better behaved turquoise hex? If so, then how do you get the better behaved turquoise hex?

I actually have a lot of flexibility vis a vis colours. But I don’t know, for example, whether #839690 a good colour. Is it??

    Thanks!

You basically need to invert a function. But keyframing in general isn’t invertible. In math lingo, the keyframing function isn’t 1-1. You can map many points to one. That happens less often with time-remapping than other properties perhaps and it doesn’t seem to be the case in your graph. But, I don’t think AE has any easy way to invert even some section of keyframing. Now, if you could somehow make all your keyframing linear, then it might be easier. But time remapping, unlike position, doesn’t allow very accurate parameterization, ie no subframe positioning. So, you’ll have to do a bunch of extra number crunching to get the inverted numbers on the frame boundaries. Ugh.

But I’m just a pleb. Maybe one of the patricians actually has something elegant for you. Good luck.

There was lots and lots of incest in the creation of the projects. I would bet even money that the whole thing will crash the first time I try and do it. Too many pre-comps of pre-comps all with the same names. But yeah, that’s probably the best way to do it. There won’t be any need to modify things however.

Actually, after playing with it some more, I guess I do want some rotation/3D. So, then I guess I should keep it in AE. What’s the easiest way to get all the still in one place in AE? I don’t think I want to import 20 AE projects into 1 just to get a still from each.

I’m not having any particular urgent problem. But I do a lot of time remapping and the lack of decimal placement and decimal precision is a daily nuisance. For example, I frequently look at the time that is being remapped and see 2.17 for four frames in a row. But they are all different because of what is going on in the precomp. So AE is working with fractions of a frame but not letting me directly access them. That may not be a bug, but it’s certainly not a feature!

If you want a simple non-time remapping example, imagine you want opacity to climb from 12.5 to 37.5 to 62.5 to 87.5 over four frames. Sure, you can enter 12.5 in the first and 87.5 in the fourth. But it’d be a lot easier if you could just enter 0 a half frame early and 100 a half frame later. It’s especially annoying if you’re not sure how much opacity you want and are just quickly trying out different things.

I’d also like to be able to nudge audio by some subframe fraction. Maybe I’ve synced things, but the audio gets tweaked and now I want to move the video up 10ms. I’m out of luck. Video may be discrete, but audio certainly isn’t. I have to go back into an audio program to crop the audio.

Please nobody mention Premier Pro. That wouldn’t fit my workflow and I’m not going to explain why! Anyway, thanks for the help. I have my answer(s).

It would help for syncing and time remapping. Look at it this way: Adobe opts for interframe placement when they allow you to stretch a set of keyframes by a random amount. They don’t snap those keyframes to the boundary. Whatever reason you could give for their wanting/needing that freedom should suffice for me. 🙂

Do you get audio during RAM preview?

I use AE 2014 and I very frequently have to go into preferences and jiggle both of the audio tabs’ output options in order to get audio to work correctly. Usually the problem is audio that is too fast or too slow. But I maybe remember once there being no audio.

My problems are brought on by the the use of audio software. Are you running any audio software on the computer? If so, go look at those preferences.

  • Maybe you can precompose the layers, then enable time remapping on the pre-composed layer, then just change a keyframe on that layer or indeed even just the postion of that layer?

This guy has some GREAT free plugins. Main one is for character animations. But he also has a layer grouper that is very good.
