Vegas does not make use of external video cards for rendering – this is what makes it so unique!
When playing back your video, be sure to set your Preview to a setting like “Preview”. Any higher settings with many transitions etc will slow down the playback.
The “Best” setting we use mostly for a ram rendered event to ensure quality

The problem with an overclocked PC is that invariably, the hardware can never keep up with disc intensive read and writes like Vegas requires. If you are going to overclock your PC, you need to be 100% sure that your hard drives can handle the thruput.
Try and render to a different hard drive than what the footage is on and you’ll probably find your problem dissappears.

You need to “Lock envelopes to events”.
From the Options menu, choose Lock Envelope to Events. There is also a shortcut on the menu bar for this. Just hover your mouse over the icons – its the one with the little padlock with a dot line over the top of the padlock

Apply a velocity envelope to the track and adjust the speed accordingly

You will get degradation doing it that way.
Your best solution would be to copy the VOB files from the DVD to Vegas

If you are going to run with Excalibur, I’d try and master its many features first. This will probably help you a long way into the editing workflow and getting to know Vegas pretty good.

There are many reasons for not making certain settings “defaultable” in Vegas.
Adjust your workflow to accomodate these items and one way would be to write a small script to do this functionality for you when required or alternatively, use one of the great many add-ons to Vegas like Excalibur. I would probably be taking ten times longer if it were not for the automation it provides.

Your best bet here would be to use the Color Corrector.
