Just to be sure, can you open the file within Vegas pro 10? What about a veg file from Vegas Pro 9?
Is the issue simply that you can’t drag from a folder outside of Vegas to a track on the timeline? Or can you not drag from the explorer in Vegas to the timeline?
I’m just trying to narrow down your issue to see if it can be isolated.

You can’t set it off-center, but you can easily open up an image editor and do as you wish with the image (off set it with a white background, fade it with another image or color, etc.).
Once you make the modification in an image editor you can then open it right up in DVDA and have it look just how you want.

Did you happen to accidentally adjust the opacity slider on the track? If that is off by even a smidgen that will dramatically affect your render times.
You did not mention if you had any fx added to the file, which I assume you know will add to the render time- some more than others.
Have you closed out all the background processes that are not being used as well as any running programs that are not necessary (such as Norton and other computer hogging software programs)? Have you tried a different project with a different file? Has any other programs seemed to run slowly (it could be a configuration issue)? Is your bootup time within a normal range?

I am not sure what you are wanting to accomplish but that should be it if you are just wanting a static image for 5 minutes on the screen. Just close out of the pan/crop window and your adjustments will be reflected on the picture you have on the timeline.
Just a suggestion: since you are in the pan/crop window take a look at the layout and you will see a timeline on the bottom of the pan/crop window. This is where you will add your keyframes (or have them added as you move your pan/crop tool over your image) if you so choose.
I would recommend moving the cursor on the keyframe timeline to the end of the timeline. Now adjust the pan/crop tool (the box over your image with the circle in it) to where you want your final movement to be at the end of the five minute timeframe. Now you will notice a keyframe appears once you move the pan/crop tool. It appears right where you have the cursor. If you watch the clip or drag the cursor over the timeline you will notice that the pan/crop tool moves and your preview window will reflect this. Now, if you place the cursor in the middle of the timeline and move the pan/crop tool another keyframe will appear and this will alter the movement. This may be something you will want to play with as it will allow you to liven up your picture.

I did not watch the video. However, if you are using an image, you will want to find a .png that has an alpha channel or a .gif file that has a transparent background that has the smiley face you want.
You can open up most decent image editors and make the background transparent yourself. That is a job that you should do in an image editor and not Vegas. Once done, add the image to the timeline and keyframe it to follow your head or whatever you are wanting it to cover. You can do this using the pan/crop feature.

Vegas Movie Studio HD 9 supports Sony m2ts files.
I am unaware if version 6 would. I would think not though due to age.

I just caught that you are using the movie studio version. I don’t believe it allows you to adjust the bitrate. You will have to pick from the available templates offered to you in that version of Vegas. I do not have it so I can’t look at it and tell you the “best” one to use.
However, you can list the templates available and we can help from there (or use the bitrate calculator and see which one matches up best for your needs).

You can fit several hours on a DVD but there is a point of diminishing returns. If you want top quality and have a lot of motion you will get up to about an hour on a single layered disc. If you have a static shot that can take up several hours on a single layered disc. The key is the bitrate. If you have 2 hours of footage and it and there is a lot of movement use the variable bitrate option and use the calculator to find out what settings you should use to get the best quality and still have your video to fit. You may want to undershoot just a bit to take into account the audio file’s size.

You added the movie as menu media.
Do this. Go to File, choose New and select the option that does not have a menu. That should do it for you.

Let it encode to one of your hard drives and then copy it over to the SD card. I think you will find that the process goes a lot quicker that way.
