[Dave Smith] “shows no audio in the Inspector (neither an speaker icon at top or an audio configuration panel at all) when the clip is selected in the timeline.”

What about the clip in the browser?

Did you add video only to the timeline?

[Dave Smith] “Can anyone confirm/deny if the file in a libary’s ‘Final Cut Original Media’ folder are in fact exact copies of the original files? Or does clicking, for example, the ‘Remove silent audio channels’ actually remove channels (possibly in error) during import? “

With that footage, FCPX rewraps the footage to .mov. I do not know of a case where this process would remove audio if there was audio there to begin with. I believe something else is going on.

Please check the clips in the browser, not the timeline.

I see, then you deleted the cards.

So the footage you tested first, now has no audio?

[Dave Smith] “I deleted the original footage after ‘seeing’ the footage imported apparently okay. Now today about a week later as i start to work on the production I’m seeing all the footage has no audio tracks… at all.”

If you deleted the footage, what are you working from?

Try the “Show Audio Lanes” option which is under the “View” menu. This gathers all clips with the same Role in more organized lanes.

Also, compound clips inherit all of the Roles that you put in it. If you expand the audio, it will show different channels of audio grouped by Role.

[James Culbertson] “Synchronized. Aren’t those also compound clips? “

Not according to the XML. Synchronized clips and compound clips have different functions.

My suggestion was going to be break them apart and remake them if they are compound clips, but Synchronized clips are harder to do that in the timeline.

But with Syncrhonized clips, you’d have to export an XML, modify the format of each referenced format, and then reimport. It’s much trickier, but doable.

Or, as you did, you can break apart the sync’d clips and use them that way.

Are they synchronized clips or compound clips?

[Bret Williams] “I do the same. Except no Final collection. Nothing is ever final. You’re just asking for trouble when you start doing that.”

    That’s why I name them “FinalCandidate_v1”

    🙂

[Xavier Paredes] “But in response to your suggestion: Saving projects as snapshots clutter my library. This would be ok if we had folders which we can organize but we don’t.”

    I use Smart Collections.

I have one that is Projects only, and I filter out the word Snapshot.

Then I have another that is Projects only, and I filter it to include only the word Snapshot.

I also have one that filters final timelines, with the word “final” in it.

[Xavier Paredes] “There are tons of things I will Apple would change in FCP X. Like for example, I don’t like the autosave. Why? let’s say I do a lot of edits but then it gets hairy. In other programs, I can REVERT or close without saving and go back to my last “safe save”. Not possible in FCP afaik.”

Get in the habit of duplicating your projects as Snapshots. This is a manual save, of sorts. I have mapped the save Project as snapshot to command-s, just like the old days.

You can also open backups of your FCPX Libraries, but that auto increments, so you may lose more than you need.

[Winston A. Cely] “Just curious, but why do you have the two clips in their own secondary storylines? They are positioned in such as way as to appear as though there is no gar between them, and thus no reason for them to be in their own containers.”

They have transitions, which means they get a secondary.

    PS, Nice sleuthing, Bret!
