You need to get your self a nice capture card that can handle the input of all of those formats and then digitize them to the same codec. DV would be good to start with since it eats up the least amount of bandwidth and since you are doing a doc, I imagine that you will have hours upon hours of footage. When you are finished with the offline edit, you can then do the online at whatever resolution you want, as long as they all match. In your case, the Kona LH would be the best solution being able to handle the SDI from the DV50 and then down-convert the analog HDV input from the HDV camera.

I don’t know how to fix this problem, but i know what’s happening. It’s has to do with how safari handles the mp4s. If you download the file you will notice that the file has a txt suffix. If you delete that and change it to mp4, it’ll work just fine. I don’t know anything about web site coding so I’m not sure if there’s something that can be done there or if it’s a safari bug.

How full are your drives and what kind of drives are you using?
I’m thinking it’s your computer not being able to insert the pulldown efficiently enough. Check out Graeme’s plug in. He writes really great, useful, and cost effective plug ins for fcp.

Are you outputting through firewire or the decklink? I’m not sure if you can control it, but I think you’d have better success outputting using the decklink and having the decklink insert the pulldown. Also, what kind of drives are you using? If you are in fact outputting through firewire and have the deck and drives on the same bus, it’s quite possible that FCP is choking while also trying to insert the pulldown. I thought the the minimum was to have a dual 1Gig G4 to have reliable real time pull down insertion, a requirement that you have exceeded. Is your sequence fully rendered?

You can add chapter markers to your sequence which will then translate into DVD studio pro automatically. When you find a point you want to make a chapter hit mm (m twice) and a dialog box will pop up, click the add chapter marker button and away you go. When you export to compressor, it will save those chapter makers.

Put all of your clips in the timeline and add the timecode reader filter on the clips. The timecode reader filter is located in the ‘video’ folder. Export to compressor and burn away.

This is one thing that M100 has over FCP (dare i even say that). There’s no ‘add transition to range’ in FCP as there is in M100. What you need to do is create a 5 frame dissolve and then drag that dissolve into your favorites folder in the effects tab. You then need to make that 5 frame dissolve the default dissolve by right clicking or control clicking that dissolve and select ‘set default transition’. Now, select all the video in the timeline and drag the timeline up to the canvas window and select overwrite with transition. you are essentially editing the timeline back into the same timeline. Viola, 5 frame dissolves on all of your cutpoints.

Hey Walter. Have you ever taken a look at the 1200A’s upconvert? In a side by side, I found the 1200A did a cleaner upconvert than the Kona2. It’ll upconvert to 720 or 1080. You need the mini dv adapter to play the small tapes.

I noticed that you are running fcp 4.5. Upgrading to qt7, while possible, is not advised unless you upgrade to fcp5 & Tiger. I’d stick with another codec until you are ready to take the plunge with Tiger & FCP5.
No, you don’t need QT Pro if you are on Tiger & FCP5. QT7 will upgrade to pro automatically upon installing fcp5. You can then use compressor to compress to h264.

I used to use a decklink, but have switched over to Kona 2 for their more robust feature set and support. At the time, and this very well could have changed by now, the Decklink did not have real time 24p HD downconversion. If that is part of your workflow this is something to consider. Also, the multibridge studio is not released yet. If you need to work now the kona 2 will get you up and running, now.
