in my experience more cache = faster access/loads which is ALWAYS nice no matter what you’re doing. avoid 5400 rpm drives.. although cheaper, they tend to respond slower.. there’s new 10k rpm drives available in IDE and SATA now.. a tad pricier than their 7200 rpm counterparts, but being used to 10k and 15k rpm scsi drives, I welcome the change to our normal motherboards.
A note on the memory things w/ afterfx.. until Adobe decides to gives us 64bit AE, the application itself is still limited to 4gigs (aprox 3.5g) of usable ram.
This however is only for the program itself. When you enable multiprocessing (the way i understand it) you can assign UP TO aprox 3.5 gigs / CORE (and a minimum of 1 gig / core).
There’s more knowledgeable people on here than can answer a lot more precisely, but I’m just sharing what I’ve learned so far in messing w/ it.

I just realized you didn’t mention how many cpu’s/cores you have…
If its a dual core go right ahead..
If you’re on a quadcore be careful. Make sure you leave at least .5 to .75 gigs of ram for your operating system or it’ll misbehave. A lot.
Dual core: 3.5 gigs / core
Quad core: 1.87 gigs / core leaves you with .5 gigs of ram
1.81 gigs / core leaves you with .75 gigs of ram for os
1.75 gigs / core is more realistic, leaves 1 gig for os so you can do other things at the same time.Dual Quad core: get more ram :S I’d suggest 32 gigs w/ this cpu setup.
Minimum ram (in my opinion) while maxing the amount per core (at 3.5 gigs / core).
Single Core: 4 gigs (3.5g-AE, .5 gig for os) – Time to upgrade…
Dual core: 8 gigs (7g-AE gig for os)
Quad core: 16 gigs (14g-AE, 2 gigs for os)
Dual Quad: 32 gigs (28g-AE, 4 gigs for os)Also, there’s the performance improving guide that has good information in it (I still haven’t finished reading it yet 😀 ).

I’ve been in the same boat before. Not knowing exactly what to search for, and asking a question in the ‘basic’ area and getting ridiculed for it.
From what little time I had to search, it seems AE will use a max of about 3.5 gigs PER CORE.
If I’m understanding that correctly, that means on a quadcore, you SHOULD be able to use about 14 gigs of ram, even though the program is still only 32bit (allowing only a total of 4 gigs for the main application).
I’ll go out on a limb here and make some guesses. I’ve wanted to try these things, but due to my budget, I’m still limited to 2 gigs of ram on a dual core system.
Set your multicpu render ( to do multiple frames at once) and give each core 3.5 gigs, leaving whatever’s left for the operating system.
It might not exactly help during PREVIEWS, but I believe during actual renders, you should notice a massive difference.
I hope this is of some help to you, please post any information you might learn along the way that may help those of us who are in the same situation, but are unable to get knowledgeable help on the subject.

You’d need some kind of ‘cooperative multitasking’ setup. There’s none to my (limited) knowledge available to the public (at an affordable price).
Gridiron Nucleo Pro might be of SOME help to you, not entirely sure.

I would add to this that you’d also want to fade one set into the other even w/ the particles. As in an opacity 100% -> 0% fade on one and vice versa on the other, would smooth the transition out.
If you don’t want to do it that way, another possibility is to go in and mask out all the people (flesh) and leave only the clothes. This will most likely be time consuming, but if you just want the bodies to fade away and no particle burst to cover the transition I believe that should work.
As for the clothes falling, you still might have to resort to the first suggestion – chroma keying some falling clothing held by strings. The only advantage to this method would be not having the particle burst.
An alternative would be to use a 3d program (Maya? Blender[free] ? ) and apply the cloth plugin to it… both equally time consuming.

If that’s the answer, then why is everyone’s solution for getting more memory to after effects, to switch to 64 bit os and cramp more ram into it?
There’s gotta be a better answer out there other than getting on this guys case for not Googling whether AE is a 32 bit app or not.

To convert the mp3’s to wav’s you can use Audacity.
It’s free, doesn’t take much power to run, and is relatively simple to use. It’s also available for Windows, MacOS, and Linux.

It might work also to take one of those haze ideas… but add to it.
I’d precomp my footage, apply the haze to the precomp, then go INTO the precomp, add a reddish-orange (fire/hell?) colored solid over top, turn the opacity to maybe 10-30, switch to additive transfer mode, and maybe (if you dont want the main shot colorized) mask off w/ subtract below the ‘horizon’ level (don’t forget to feather it).
That should give you your ‘hell’ish atmosphere.
Could also add an adjustment layer with a glow effect to kind of make it “pop” out at you and wrap around objects.
