When I edit with similar file names from different cameras, I put them into different bins by Camera or CamOp (AVID MC).

Hi Keith,
Another camera to consider if you are looking for a fixed lens camera and are willing to go outside the Sony world is the Panasonic DVX200. It is certainly in your price range and has numerous professional capabilities along with internal 8bit 4K and variable frame rate up to 120 fps in HD.Regards,

I have both the Ex1r and an FS5 with the Sony 18-110 lens. The FS5 is a very light camera with 8bit 4K, 10bit HD and the ability to shoot raw with the upgrade and an external recorder. If you want to shoot log, though, it is not the camera to get. The FS7 is really closer to the Ex1(r). Add the 18-110 lens and you have all the capabilities of the EX1 plus 10bit 4K and so much more. It will serve you way into the future. I rarely use auto focus, so I can’t comment on that other than to say that push auto works quite well when I have used it on the FS5. I use the camera with a variety of lens in addition to the 18-110, but the lens I leave on the camera is the 18-110. It has a lovely smooth manual and power zoom, as well as focus. Works rather like the lens on the Ex1(r). Good luck.

July 22, 2015 at 1:07 pm in reply to: Sony Cameras – EX-1/EX-3 replacements… Your current work-horse? Favorite features?I have had an EX1r for years. Been a great camera, but lately I have been thinking that I should upgrade. I have been intrigued by the PXW X200, but I have been reading about some users who are having problems with the lens. I haven’t been able to discern if they have been in contact with Sony on these issues or not. Could be just a bad sample or something worse. The other camera that I have been thinking about is the Sony FS7. Bit more money all in, but looks to have a lot of great attributes, but do I want to replace a camera with a built-in lens with one where I have to change lenses? I also have a Panasonic AF100 which has served me well, so I know what the lens changing and rig setup costs and usage issues would be. 4K is also of interest for use when editing; I think it would be very useful. Last but not least, there are a lot of BlackMagic cameras about to come out along with the new Panasonic DVX200 4K camera. My action plan: WAIT A BIT for things to evolve. I am not being pushed to upgrade by a client so there is no rush.

June 6, 2012 at 6:16 pm in reply to: Symphony 6 will not open- Error initializing audio hardware?Symphony is not qualified for use with 10.7.4, so that may be the issue, though I still think it may be an OSX issue.
Does audio work in other programs?
Have your tried shutting the unit down and then pulling the plug for 15 seconds and/or rebooting and holding the command, option, P and R keys (PRAM reset) . Then let the unit go through three reboot cycles prior to letting the keys up. Those are two Apple resets you can do that might fix the problem.
Did you trash the audio prefs? They get rebuilt on reboot.

June 6, 2012 at 12:47 pm in reply to: Symphony 6 will not open- Error initializing audio hardware?I get that issue periodically. In my case, it means that that the OS has an audio issue. Go into preferences and see if the the audio output is muted and greyed out. If it is, then you wil need to go through Apple’s reset procedure to clear that out or call the Apple Express Lane to guide you through the process. I called them three times. Finally, trashing the audio prefs cleared up the issue.

February 29, 2012 at 9:56 pm in reply to: Is it ok for AVID to be slow with AMA footage?I have been editing with AVID 5.5.3 using many hours of xdcam footage with no issues whatsoever. Didn’t want to have to transcode and haven’t. I will consolidate shortly, but AMA works great for me at the moment. Make sure you have the correct Sony codec for your version of AVID installed.

I use ClipWrap to get the footage quickly into FCP. Works great. Log and Transfer works too, but takes longer. AVID does not appear to have an AMA connection to get AVCHD footage into it. Too bad, because I am sold on AMA. Works great for P2 and XDCAM.

Paltex…. gosh I liked that system. My hands could fly over the keybd…got out of editing, except as a producer to rough cut with both AVID and FCP, now heading back in. Have been taking the LYNDA.com training course, as well as AVID online course and the lessons available here at creativecow. I do like the cleaner interface of the AVID. It is much faster to use for me. AMA is just super for EX footage.

Apple has produced a consumer/prosumer level product. Just look at the feature set, the names they use to describe processes, the lack of a customizable interface, the devices they feature in the menus, the lack of a way to work with audio studios or colorists, the inability to import existing FCP7 programs. This has not been designed as an upgrade to FCP7. There is no upgrade path. All of that should tell you that this is not a product for professionals. Period. It is a new product with some neat features that appears to have been designed by the iMovie team at Apple.
They made one mistake here, and that is to try and piggyback on the FCP name. They should have called it something different so there would be no confusion. It is not a successor to Final Cut Pro 7. There isn’t one. This product may sell a lot of macs coming out in August, but, I am sure that they know that will lose the professional market and they probably don’t care.
