I eventually gave up on using the Matrox Forums to get help, but found there current support phone number, and they responded quickly–even though I had no serial number to give them.
The answer is that the Matrox VFW codecs were never updated to run in Windows 10. They suggested that I use a Windows 7 machine. I did a fresh install of Win 7 and with VFW installed, I could view the old files in Windows Media Player and RealPlayer (although not in the correct wide-screen ratio), so I thought the problem was solved.
But, Premiere still locks up when trying to render the files (and Pinnacle Studio only shows a black screen). It appears as though there are certain spots along the timeline that cause the problem, as I was able to export short intervals of time (from 30 seconds up to 3 minutes at a time) but it would always lock up once I tried to get past the 10-minute mark. A few other old videos show nothing but black or gray and won’t export anything.
So, I guess I’ll just have to be satisfied with the video that was captured on the school’s standard def camera. What is frustrating is that if I would have just made blu-ray ISO files at the time, I WOULD be able to burn those now. I did that for one game, but in 08-09 almost nobody had blu-ray players, so I never bothered to make more at the time.

I won’t have access to those files for about a week, but will try drop box after that.

?? I’m hoping you have some more advice.
Anyone know of a company that would be able to do the transfer if I sent them the files? I tried a place called ‘Legacybox’ with no luck, no luck locally yet, either.

I just rolled back the Windows Update and now everything is working.

I’ve had 3 different Sony models over the past 2 years. None have worked for H264. Two worked for MPG2. Oddly, it was the $50 black Friday units that played my burned DVDs without problem, while a more expensive model couldn’t.
I’ve tried ri-data Blu-Ray DVDs and Verbatim, no difference as far as H264 is concerned.
I almost always stick with the default export settings with 20 as the max rate.

I saw that chart earlier today, and it was helpful. But I was more interested in WHICH data type should be used for the one faster drive.

I bought a pack of Verbatim DateLifePlus and have now burned 10 discs without an error. I don’t know why the brand I have used for years suddenly started giving me over 50% coasters. (and I’ve got close to 200 of those sitting on my shelf)

I ended up putting 3 PCIe Intensity Pro cards in to the computer, connected to 3 inexpensive HDMI camcorders. I get 6 good USB webcams and sometimes up to 8, although a lot of the time the last 2 to be added have dropped frame issues with Wirecast. It took me a long while to get to this point, but on the whole, I’m very satisfied with the Pro cards, and can live with (only) 6 working webcams.

Thanks for pointing it out — for some reason, the codec was set for H264 instead of animation. It’s working now.

It WAS the video card. The nVidia card was somehow putting the haze on the video. I put in a Radeon card and now the webcasts are crystal clear.
