I am running into a similar situation. Just downloaded the trial and set up a simple 2 clip sequence made of Avid DV50 .mxf footage.

The first clip is wrong in the AE project and replaced with the second clip. Both this incorrect clip and and the second clip show up with a place holder.

The first clip is shown in the Reconnect Media list as online. But is not referenced in the imported AE sequence.

Plus, AE crashes if I choose MXF only in the Link To Original Source area.

Now, I will say that this is CS3 After Effects. And while the Boris plug identified that, I wonder if this is an issue?

Just for info, Avid is MC 5.5.2 on Mac.

Avid MC version 5.0 and up can use what is called AMA to link directly to ProRes and just edit (maybe earlier versions – this is a good starting point). Now, how smoothly this works depends on CPU, GPU and disc speed. But the ProRes can be transcoded to a native Avid format as well after doing the AMA link (and weeding out the footage as well).

What you describe is a limitation of a mixdown in Avid. The only thing I can think about would be to lift whatever you are planning on mixing down to a higher track, trimming towards heads the amount you want in handle mixing down, and cutting that back into your sequence.

Or figuring out how to avoid a mixdown. Just curious – what generally are you doing mixdowns of?

All three of my examples are for a license to write Avid DNX – MXF. (At least that is how I read the Lightworks material).

Yes, MXF is different than Quicktime. Writing DNX Quicktimes has been free for as long as I can remember. But MXF is the preferred codec if you are an Avid user – it is the native media. Without it round tripping between Avid and Resolve is cumbersome at best.

And since I wrote this musing, the situation has gotten even more interesting.

AJA has announced that they will be providing a FREE update to their KiPro Mini to enable writing of DNX (MXF is implied) as well.

It seems as if someone inside Avid finally figured out that making it easy / cheap for people to create media that feeds their software just might make more revenue than charging a high license fee ever would.

So maybe Blackmagic can renegotiate it’s deal …

Thanks for the input so far.

Portability is not a big deal in this application.

So the conundrum is better performance or better support.

I have had trouble finding performance specs on the Sonnet product that can be used in comparison.

I noticed you posted a similar response before. My concern is two things.

First, it seems that creating a path in Write On is not as easy/controlable as with a stroke from a mask (my desire).

Second, I was planning on using a shape layer for the stroke to get some of the options available there.

I don’t think I can get these options with Write On – am I wrong?
