Seems like you are in a PAL area? Never go below 25fps then, that is the video standard (or 24p if suitable). If the computer is crashing, failing to export, lowering the frame rate is not the answer, you have bigger issues.
Are you editing the 50p clips in 50p Sequence? Try moving them to a 25p Sequence. Will look the same, maybe it will help with the export to 25p? Create a new sequence at 25p, then copy/paste entire contents of 50p sequence to 25p sequence.
What are the export settings? A screen shot of export settings panel will be helpful, maybe we will see something amiss in the settings used.
Delivery – are you trying to create a regular “DVD” or just using DVD media for data? If making a DVD for people to play in DVD players, there is ONE format you can use and that is MPEG-2 DVD. Period. If you supply anything else to Encore (or any DVD authoring software) it WILL transcode the video to MPEG-2 anyway, that is the only legal format for the DVD specification.
No need for dual-layer media for 80 minutes of video (if making an actual DVD). Just encode at bit rate of 7.0 and it will fit. Dual-layer discs add a lot of complexity/potential headaches in the authoring process.

I can’t speak for CS4, but at least since CS6 dissolves have never finished properly – they fade down to a point, then suddenly and prematurely just end abruptly. Most noticeable if you put a white title over black background and dissolve out. Play it frame by frame – opacity ramp down to transparent never finishes, just disappears short of completion.
With CC, in Sequence Settings, uncheck Composite in Linear Color. Also turn OFF the GPU rendering before exporting, see if that helps.

Hi Nicholas,
It is inevitable that when you scale an image, quality will go down. You are losing resolution, using less of the pixels from original clip to fill the same amount of screen.
What are the specs of the source clip? For instance 1080p, or what? There is a trick you might benefit from – edit the clip in a sequence with lower resolution, for instance edit 1080p clip in a 720p sequence. The clip will be larger than the “frame” you are putting it in. Now you have some extra pixels to play with. Use Adobe Motion to adjust scale. You will be able to zoom in some without losing any quality since you have more pixels than needed to fill the 720p frame. Once you zoom to a certain point though, you do then start blowing up the image and again losing quality. But this will afford you some leeway. Then export as 720p.
Putting 1080p clip in 720p sequence, setting Scale to 67% you will see entire original clip, then you can zoom in as far as 100% with NO quality loss. Anything past 100% you are starting to blow up the image. You might find that up to 110-120% looks acceptable, depends on quality and detail of original clip.

Hi Dominic,
No, you do not need to change the sequence settings or re-scale footage. Whether editing as 1080p or 720p Sequence, simply export as MPEG-2 DVD format, and choose the NTSC DV Widescreen Progressive preset. The trick to get rid of the pillar box edges is to select Scale to Fill in Export Settings.

Hi Johnny,
Let’s back up a bit. Just to be clear, you edit in Vegas, but are using Adobe Encore for the DVD? You should have Sony DVD Architect, correct? Maybe try that?
As for this .mp4 that is giving you the trouble – the audio remains perfectly in sync when playing in Vegas timeline?
What was the source of the .mp4? Many phones and game capture apps use Variable Frame Rate recording and that can do weird things with sync. If source is VFR, try converting to Constant Frame Rate with free HandBrake app, then proceed with converting new file to MPEG-2 DVD.

When Multiplex is set to DVD, the Media Encoder spits out a single file with audio and video combined. Encore wants the separate files, so leave that set to NONE. I know it seems counter-intuitive, but remember that when you select the MPEG-2 DVD format, it is set to NONE by default ????
