Do you have unlimited RT turned on?

Handy indeed. I’ve built presets fire all my outputs already, but if I had these I wouldn’t have had to build them.

I’ve done some ProRes encoding in AME. It’s fast, but compared with MXF/XDCAM encoding it feels sluggish. The QT32 component really slows it down.

  • Dave makes a very good point here with “a few good takes.” I would ask for at least three. Also, be sure to send a sample audio file. New Yorkers speak faster than mid-westerners. Hopefully a sample clip will get everyone on a similar tempo.

I’ve never been able to find data one way or the other. I figure it if it were faster Apple would have bragged about, or someone would have documented it. I would check with the folks on the Final Cut X forum. They’re far more likely to know.

Alternatively, you can do a 30 day trial on Creative Suite here to see if the difference will be noticeable on your system:

I’d sooner invest in more ram. 8gb should run well under $100. You might be able to put 16gb into your laptop. Check 3rd party sources. Apple says 8gb is the max for my laptop, but I’m typing on it now with 16gb installed.

Personally, I use Adobe Media Encoder for H.264 conversions. I find it about two or three times faster than running a Quick Cluster in Compressor, and many more times faster if you’re simply submitting jobs to “this computer.” Media Encoder is multicore aware, so it makes better use of your hardware. It also encapsulates the H.264 is a multi-platform friendly mpeg container rather than Quicktime. I still use Compressor when converting to ProRes, but for anything else (H.264, XDCAM, MPEG2, etc.) it’s Media Encoder. Media Encoder isn’t sold separately, it comes bundled with Adobe Creative Suite software.

I think it really depends on how seriously you’re considering Adobe Premiere — and if you are, how serious are you with motion graphics?

If you’re staying on the Final Cut side of things an iMac will serve you well. If you’re staying on the video side of things with Premiere, an iMac will serve you well. If you’re getting into motion graphics on the Adobe side of things, you’ll want a MacPro with a Quadro video board. A Quadro turned a 17 hour AE render into an under 2 hour render on my MacPro. That’s not to say an iMac couldn’t handle graphics in After Effects — it certainly can — but if you spend a lot of time doing AE graphics a MacPro and a Quadro card can pay for itself relatively quickly.

  • Is the sample rate correct?

An SD downrez is always going to look worse. And squeezing 2:45 onto a dual layer dvd – there’s going to be some hit involved with that as well. There’s a reason Blu-Ray came around.

Without knowing your client, I would be inclined to make it look more “consumer.” Mild sharpening, a bit more contrast/saturation, see what feedback you get in response.

If you’re shooting for free, make sure you leave with something you’re happy to put your name on. If you don’t you’ve given away a mediocre product with your name on it, and you have nothing you want to show for it.
