You don’t mention what flavor of HD you are shooting for 4 months. If it is HDV and you don’t intend to upgrade your workflow to HD, I would pass on the IOHD as you can capture HDV over firewire rather easily. Shooting interviews shouldn’t be very long gop unfriendly and you don’t need to lug the extra gear while traveling. If I were you, you shoud check out the new AJA field recorder instead.

I also stumbled upon this program: https://www.allocinit.com/index.php?title=CamTwist
It allows you to switch cams and add graphics etc. Kind of a poor mans switcher but with my IOHD and ISight, I now have two sources (make that 4 by adding component and composite Switched in control panel during preview) and more with USB.

I do this every Friday night. I used to use Stickam.com and my set up was 1080i into sdi 1, HDMI out to monitor and signal was 525 1 into stickam. It had to be 525. We had problems with stickam and last wek switched to Ustream. Ustream can take the 1080i signal with no down convert. So now it’s 1080i straight through and it works fine. Ustream has a settings window like all do. It’s flash settings. Ustream has presets for DVC Pro 720 and 1080. I tried them but I couldn’t get a signal to pass so I just selected 1080 and it worked fine.

Hi Kevin,
I have an older Denon receiver which does not have HDMI. I go component out of the IOHD into input 3. I bought BNC to RCA cables. I also use the AES audio out into 2 AJA ADA4 converters and transformers and go xlr to rca into the external inputs. I can play a 5.1 session off the timeline or toggle those tracks off and toggle stereo on. This really helps me with my editing on the fly. My timelines are pro res hq and my 3 angle multiclips play perfectly.

Rent for 5-6 times and you might as well own one. I love mine and seriously doubt any FC user wouldn’t find more uses than they ever planned on. Aside from normal uses, I added it into my home theater workflow directly off of my timeline. Buy it.

I am in the same predicament. I am asked often to go to a bar and produce youtube vids. Often the lighting sucks. Do you have a general statement that a one man show like me can go in with to try to do a general job for web video? Of course when you start out, and I assume you have quite a while ago, you have to try to impress as soon as possible with NO money. Any suggestions to walking in and geting decent images without relying on gain and exposure to the max?

Thanks Bob. I have a couple AJA ADA4’s. They have dip switches to go from +4 to -10. You think putting two of those before the IOHD would’ve worked? So I guess my MBP could take an xlr to mini and attenuate it internally? Cause that’s how we got the webcast done – 1080i60 to 535 down convert for the video and then 2 XLR’s to a mini split stereo into built in input.
One other thing I may have done wrong. I was in low light and I thought I was adjusting the gain but I accidently went from 60 frames to 30 and then to 15. When I noticed it, I went back to 60 and adjusted the gain. It might have been coincidence that is when we switched the audio. Could it have been a frame rate distortion? Also, next time I intend to send the mic feeds to the camera and then send the audio down the sdi. Will that give me the same problems?
