With FCPX, you get the layout choices they give you and while you can save the current state pf panels as far as opened/closed/resized goes there are no truly customisable workspaces.

An alternative is to apply the letterbox effect to the entire project using an adjustment layer (empty text clip above the entire project) then you can adjust the clips below the text layer any way you want without affecting the Letterboxing.
Another way would be to create a new letterbox effect in Motion that includes a zoom control as well as the horizontal/vertical shift. I haven’t tried but you could probably just duplicate the existing effect by opening it in Motion then adding the extra control to it.

All I can say is that it’s pointless confusing FCPX with FCP. It is what is. Personally, I changed over day one and haven’t looked back.
Going back to the edge thing, I can’t say I ever used in FCP so it’s not something I’ve ever missed. i guess it could be implemented but they’d have to somehow allow for if one of the items below was a storyline instead of a clip. Or an audio clip instead of a video clip. We traditionally put audio under the primary storyline through forc of habit but there’s no reason you can’t stack audio above it.
Anyway, annoying as it might be, I guess Apple haven’t missed the option either. You can submit feedback and feature requests from within the app.

Hmmm – i don’t recall what you’re describing ever being true in FCPX. Not having tracks, how would it know what clips above or below should have transitions applied? Maybe I missed something? “Nests” were things in legacy FCPX weren’t they? Haven’t seen FCP since FCPX came out so my recollection of that app is a more than a little vague.
A compound clip is just a group of clips bundled together and behaves like any other normal clip. You can apply transitions and effects to it as you see fit.

Not 100% sure I follow what you’re doing but… you can select multiple clips and apply the default transition. Usually if you have a stack of clips, you’d bundle them into a compound clip and apply a single transition to that.

I actually had to do exactly this a couple of years ago and, for me at least, none of the quick fix solutions worked. In the end, I cloned/painted it out in After Effects. If she’s not moving much it won’t take as long as you think. My clip was about two minutes and from memory, I spend just over a day getting it right but half of that was figuring out the best approach.

I’d probably need a little more detail about the types of files and how they’re organised to understand what’s going on but in general, FCPX copies files between libraries. If your files are organised in folders in the Finder then multiple libraries will access the same files without making duplicates but if they’re inside a managed library and you copy them to another library then I’d expect it to duplicate them.

You can create custom effects in Motion and there are hundreds of effects both paid and free that do whatever you can think of but nothing that’s going to be exactly the same as FCP7.
I may not be the right person to speak to this though. I used and loved FCP7 for years but after using FCPX, I’d rather poke myself in the eye than use it again, so I don’t really remember anything special about the effectsit had.
It doesn’t matter what you do, the only thing that’s going to be like fcp7 is fcp7. Whatever application you transition to is going to be it’s own thing, with its own way of doing things.
