The files used to create the DVD are in the “Final Cut Projects/Shared Items” folder. Plus there will probably be some render files created during output which you can clear out the usual way under the File menu.

The bottom line for quality is to not have to make up pixels that aren’t really there so here in Australia working at 576p for SD I’d upload 540p. If you are working at 480p then use whatever setting is 480p or less.

So as not to clog up my RAM, I keep other projects on this drive as “reference” projects where the project is seen and skimmable – but not “loaded” by virtue of keeping the clips in Disk Image archives. These will only fully “populate’ if I open the images into the desktop via double clicking their disk images in the finder.

Not quite sure I get this bit… are we talking about the media used in the project? In that case, wouldn’t the project just show the red missing media clip? Not sure how you can take the media away from a project and still keep it skimmable…

Yes, Chronosync will only copy the files that have changed. You also have control over the definition of changed if you need that. Once you get to grips with how it works, It’s the most versatile backup app I’ve found so far.

Just finished a project with pretty much the same situation…

I’d personally just edit in a PAL SD timeline and let FCPX work it’s magic. The 1080i will look fine. The NTSC will look a fraction soft but from my experience it’s not really noticeable – even projected.

If the NTSC video is noticeably poor quality then you might run it through compressor before you start editing and use the frame controls to enhance the conversion – but you’ll be adding a lot of time, maybe hours, to the conversion process.

It’s amazing how often just letting Compressor do its thing yields great results 🙂

Just wanted to add, because it doesn’t seem to be made clear here or in the original AndyNick post that the folder doesn’t have to be at the root level of the drive. Putting footage in any folder named ‘Video’ and choosing ‘Open Archive…’ will let you import.

I prefer my clips to have timecode so I still use Grinder for import. I also use it’s proxy files with burnt in filename and timecode a lot for client previews.

It does the same for me but I don’t really see that it matters. It may say NTSC but if the frame size, rate and colour space are right then it’s still effectively PAL. The difference between PAL/NTSC is a little fuzzier in HD.

Alternatively, you can always manually set the project to PAL when you create it.

Sadly, no. I’ve seen suggestions that Apple may add support for Canon DSLRs in a future version but more likely it’s up to Canon to write the import plugin.
