Project mgmt – RAID backup drive…
So I’ve got a single cheap large drive that does a nightly backup of my project RAID. It’s always online, so I never have to think about it, just fires up at 2Am to run it’s backup task.
Problem: as this is a “clone” of my RAID, when I run FCPX it sees the Events & Projects on the backup FIRST (no idea why) and then gives me an “info” message that it sees a duplicate of those files on my RAID, and thus the RAID files will not be viewable in X.
Any suggestions? OTHER THAN un-mounting the backup drive. I know, it’s easy, but then I have to remember to plug it in at day’s end, when all that’s on my mind is a cold brew. 😉

Create a folder on you destination disk called “FCP X backups” or whatever and then use Chronosync to sync the project drive to that folder…
Its what I do to back up my G tech to my drobo…..

That’d work if that was all I’m backing up. This is a clone of the entire RAID.

Nope it will work for that – its exactly what I do.
I have a G-Tech 2TB RAID3 drive which is my main work drive and is called “Video 5”. I use Chronosync to back up to a folder on my Drobo called “video 5 copy” which itself lives in a folder called “work”.
works a treat!
The Drobo is always online and FCP X doesn’t see the copies of Video 5’s event and project files as they aren’t in the root folder.

Why did you choose Chronosync over some of the other drive copy options?

Interesting. I use SuperDuper, and that needs to work from the root of the target drive (I believe). I’ll need to read up some & see if it’ll clone to a subdir.

Reading the Chronosync FAQs, but I can’t see if it will modify ONLY those files that have changed. ie; delete & add only as needed.
Does it do this?
(This is why I use SuperDuper – after the initial clone, subsequent backups take only as long as needed to copy/delete files that have changed.)

Yes, Chronosync will only copy the files that have changed. You also have control over the definition of changed if you need that. Once you get to grips with how it works, It’s the most versatile backup app I’ve found so far.

Guys,
All you really need to understand is the way that FCP X works. When working with external drives, you have to create two folders, Final Cut Events and Final Cut Projects, on the root level of the drive.
For backup purposes so that you don’t see e backup data in your events, you just need to backup up to a specified folder. Once you do this FCP X will not see the clips in the Events area. Simple as that.
