This is a bit of a vague answer but while h264 supports encoding 4:2:2, I’m not sure Compressor can do it. Certainly earlier versions could only encode h264 as 4:2:0. In all honesty, Compressor isn’t the best h264 encoder out there.

Mainly though, i believe you’re needing to encode in the h264 high profile setting. Just beware that if you’re putting it on the web there will be a lot of devices that can’t play it.

With apologies to the original poster, I feel the irresistible urge to rant for a minute…

You wouldn’t expect someone who had never used Avid before to just install it and start editing a spot as fast as someone who’s used it for years. Nor can anyone expect to install something like FCPX and just use it. It’s especially true with FCPX where previous NLE experience doesn’t really apply.

Maybe I’m just turning into a grumpy old editor but I can’t believe how many people post “this software sucks” when what they really mean is “I’ve only been using it for a couple of days and I don’t have a clue how it works..”.

Read the manual, watch some training videos, work with FCPX for a few months and while there are plenty of workflows that Avid is probably better suited to, you’ll go back to Avid and see it for the dinosaur it really is.

When you create proxy media, you switch to using it in preferences. Go to preferences and switch back before export to use the original/optimised media.

I can’t see any real advantage and I’d think it would be a recipe for disaster if anything happens that you lose track of the drive with the media on it. In the interests of coming back to a project weeks, months, or years later, I’d definitely want to have my event and the media it refers to in the same spot.

Fair enough – unless there’s something I’ve missed the best option is one of the replace commands followed by s and delete the detached, unwanted audio.

Ummmm… I’m going to have to ask, what’s the issue that you can’t use one of the three replace options? Just trying to imagine what you need to accomplish that those commands can’t…

I think there was a desire to have projects and events as self-contained as possible, for probably the same reason there’s no support for outputting reference Quicktime files any more. Not sure it’s necessarily the right decision but I can see why they might do it.

I just finished a project with a 2hr40 timeline. No problems rendering or exporting but I always do pretty much what Bill did – export as ProRes at the timeline resolution the re-encode elsewhere.

Just a couple of thoughts…

1. Have you tried exporting via Compressor?

2. have you tried cutting and pasting the current project into a new one? It sounds to me like something’s corrupted in the project so creating a new one may make a difference.

3. You might try deleting your render files then choosing a different render format from the default in your project settings.

Those would be my first three go-to options if I were in the same situation.

Haven’t had a chance to look for a solution yet but I just ht the same problem this morning when trying to archive a project. I told FCPX to duplicate the project to a new drive and told FCPX to duplicate the project + used clips – all clips.

The result was a duplicate of the project but all compound clips were offine. The whole point here is to archive my project in it’s final state so breaking apart clip items isn’t an answer – There are 50+ compound clips and other compound clips inside those compound clips.

In my case, there was also a problem with the media while the project was being set up and there are in some cases 3 or 4 duplicates of some clips so I want to leave those extra copies behind when I archive.

So what is the best way to archive/copy/move a project like that? I don’t remember FCPX having that sort of issue with compound clips before…

Rhianna was shot in front of the light. The other two really just look like they were keyed in front of a blurred circle that’s supposed to be a spotlight although it may have been shot in a large room with a real spot on a far wall. I don’t see enough wrap from the spot light to make me think its real.

If you had to recreate the Rhianna part of the clip where she’s obscuring the light, you might look at Boris Continuum Complete’s 3D lens flare filter, or similar. With some careful masking, you could probably get a nice spotlight effect that wrapped around and shone “past’ the actor in front of it.

In any event, you might want to ask the question in the Morion or After Effects forums as FCPX can do compositing but I’d really want to be doing anything complex in an app that gives me more control.
