I’ll go further than Craig – why bother encoding at all. Use the Media manager to make a copy of all that footage into a new project on the HD that you have. Any changes, open the project, boom, fix (or send to compressor)

Monitor the temperature – if it’s overheating, try (seriously) getting a fan to help move air through the CPU. It’s likely that one of the heat sinks isn’t doing enough good – and you’ll need to have the system serviced…if it’s a heat issue.

No – I don’t think there is a utility that will restore icon sizes or dock sizes. I’ve looked too. SwitchRes wills ave tehir position but I don’t think it’ll do anything beyond that.

What is 1280p? There’s 1080 and 720…but what is 1280? do you mean 720?

Send directly from Premiere Pro to Adobe Media Encoder – this will ignore any renders and create the highest quality final mpeg2 product. Adobe is using the same Mpeg2 codec as the other “major” players (Telestream, Sorenson.) VBR, 2 pass, and the highest data rate your video can afford.

Hard to really say – I’d probably work at whatever the greatest bulk of my footage was.
I could give a convincing argument both ways: Scaling 720 up to 1080 just to downconvert to 480 (dvd) seems like extra scaling.
But 1080 down to 720 down to 480 means that the footage may get transformed twice.

3) VBR. Yeah, a high bit rate CBR is pretty much no different though.

Yes, all DVDs are interlaced – they can store 23.976 information as progressive (if it’s progressive) and then add pulldown to become 30i.

Yeah, um. No.

You want a film look? Shoot film.
Film ‘looks’ are 3 things:
Frame rate, short Depth of Field, S curve color correction.

You’ll do better to:
Get Magic bullet or other sort of ‘filmic’ response.
If you didn’t shoot with a good looking DOF, try to build it.
Not worry about interlacing/24- The 24p look is the least of the three to ‘feel’ filmic.

Don’t you wish there was something like Magnum for FCP? There is. It’s called Scene Detector.

So, use it, open up the XML in FCP, drag the timeline clips back to a bin – export that and you have your problem solved (I think.)

I’m sure it’s in windows with the default install, because I tested it with CS5.

Tim – I don’t recall – does Premiere Pro CS4 work with ProRes if you install the codec (or the current QuickTime which installs it) on windows?
