November 14, 2014 at 2:51 pm in reply to: PPro, MacPro Late 2013 Capture Solution – What are using to digitize your tapes? From this informal survey, it appears that no one is using Premiere Pro on a new Mac Pro to capture from field tape. At least not successfully without some workarounds or hoop-jumping.

November 11, 2014 at 5:14 pm in reply to: PPro, MacPro Late 2013 Capture Solution – What are using to digitize your tapes?I haven’t tried that. I suppose in a pinch I might resort to that, but doesn’t strike me as an everyday workflow due to the time and effort involved that you’ve indicated.
I think I would take the tape to a machine running FCP 7 and a Kona card and capture it using those professional applications and devices and avoid trying to identify every timecode break on the tape and manually reconciling exact timecode on each clip I’ve captured.
It doesn’t sound like you are capturing field tape successfully with Premiere either unless you resort to such fix-it-in-post kind of methods you’ve mentioned.

Thanks for that feedback.
Does that Blackmagic Media Express software allow you to digitize field tapes that have timecode breaks (automatically creating a new clip and continuing the digitizing/capturing process)? -

I’ve sent Bluefish’s North America contact an email asking if they have a solution. Don’t see one mentioned on their website and their CC page looks Windows only with a note next to OS X installer “Coming soon!” -

Are you using a Blackmagic device to capture/digitize your tape sources? -

However, I’m really looking for real world field tape digitizing/capturing experience. I’ll keep that in mind if I’m looking for monitoring/playback solutions.

Haven’t found that to be true in real world experience here.
I have 15 years of HD field tapes and haven’t found a solution to digitize/capture those tapes due to the timecode breaks inherit in the field tapes. I do know that AJA has NO solution with their applications (VTR Exchange and Control Room and PPro Plug-In). Premiere Pro CC doesn’t seem to be able to offer a field tape capture solution either as it has no ability to create a new clip when encountering a timecode break– something FCP had for as long as I remember and AVID as well. Seems like a foundational/fundamental task that is absent in Premiere and AJA offerings.
Do you agree? -

What application are you using to digitize/capture?
On field tapes, how does it handle timecode breaks?
