This is the only way I’ve figured out how to deal with this.

Render the lens flare by itself, then import the movie and use it as a mask for the layer with the lens flare. Use the Hue/saturation tool to remove all the color and then use the curves tool (these are both under filters/adjustment) to darken the darks and lighten the lights.

    Hope that helps

You could try pre-composing the layers with the brush strokes and using the new comp as the mask

    Hi Phil

I’m going to give you a couple of ways to do this depending on the version of After Effects you have.

    1. I hope you have Photoshop. In PSD create a canvas the size of your composition. Fill it with Black. Under filters, go to the noise filter and add a lot of noise to this layer, make it monochrome. Next, use a gaussian blur to soften slightly. Then, under image – adjustment – threshold, increase the threshold until you like what you’ve created. Then add alittle more blur to soften again. You can add more star and change the size of the stars by repeating this on a new layer, then using a transfer mode of screen for the layer. (From what I’ve read, this how the guys at ILM make star fields).

To make them twinkle, you can use adjustment layers with masks to change the brightness of the individual stars.

Warp speed, use a radial blur, set on Zoom with a key frame set to 0, then over time ramp it up to where you like it.

    2. In AE 6.5 there are a couple of filters that might work for you, Try Star burst with a speed set to 0 for the stars, then you can ramp up the speed and add the Radial blur with zoom to go to warp speed. The other one is Particle System II, use this with a gravity of 0, this can be used to go to warp speed.

    Hope this helps

  • I would try leaving the PSD file the old size, take the images that you want to add to AE, put them on their own layer and center them. You can either write over the orginal file or save the new layers as their own file.

Go to AE and import just the new layers into the existing composition. The old animation doesn’t change, you’re just adding a couple of new layers to it.

In the options for the marquee tool, there is a pull down menu, in the pull down menu is an item called “Fixed Size”. When you select this, next to the pull menu a width and height fields will be highlighted. Make the height the number of pixels of the canvas, and the width however wide you want the stripes. Click the apple and shift keys with the i key and it will invert the selection.

    No

Sorry if I miss led you, You want to click on the icon of the layer you are working on (In this case the text layer). In the layers pallete, do you see the layer with the Big T on it? That’s what you want to click on

You’ll have to use a layer mask.

Use the type tool and type your text over the image you want to mask. Size it so that it’s where you want it. Hold down the apple key and click on the layer Icon for the text layer in the layers pallete. This will make a selection from the text. Hide the text layer.

Now, select the layer that has the image (Make sure the eye ball is on for this layer) Click on the mask button at the bottom of the pallete. (The gray square with the circle in the middle).

    OK, try this

Open the original Photoshop file. In the layers palette, double click the layer icon for the ball, this will make a layer out of the background. Use the oval marquee selection tool to select the ball (See below for an easy way to accurately select a round shape). Invert the selection by hitting Apple, Shift I. and then hit the delete key. You now have a layer with just the ball. Save as a .PSD file and re-import into AE. You may want to import just the layer into AE.

Here’s a way to get an accurate selection quickly: Pull out guideline to each side of the ball (Top, Bottom, Right and left). With the oval selection tool, click and hold the cross hairs in the upper left corner where the top and left guides meet. Hold down the shift key and drag the cross hairs to the right and bottom guide intersection.

    Good luck

May 13, 2005 at 6:19 am in reply to: Bitmap with an alpha channel?

There are really two types of Bitmap files.

The First is a .BMP that can be saved with a color space of RBG. This file can have an alpha channel.

The second is a file with a color space of Bitmap. The bitmap color space allows for only two colors: 100% Black and white. This file can be saved in many formats. This file cannot include an alpha channel
