i have a few solid layers which i have applied some lens flare effects to and set their blending mode to add. i need to render my animation with an alpha matte so it can be placed over footage. but every time i try to render this animation with an alpha matte, these layers show up as solid while they are visible in the comp. is there any way to render this so that those layers will only show the effects applied to them?

    thanks

This is the only way I’ve figured out how to deal with this.

Render the lens flare by itself, then import the movie and use it as a mask for the layer with the lens flare. Use the Hue/saturation tool to remove all the color and then use the curves tool (these are both under filters/adjustment) to darken the darks and lighten the lights.

    Hope that helps

You need to unmultiply the brightness to create an alpha. Look for an plugin called XMult on google – it’s free and does the trick.
