    “n”

When you hit “n” look at the upper right of the timeline. You’ll see the icon that does the same thing, going on and off as you hit it.

Go to Amazon.com and search for “Apple Pro Training Series”

Those are all very good books.

I just bought a 300 GB drive for my G5.

I looked at the 400 GB drives, but the ones I found all had an 8 MB cache built in. The 300 GB drive had a 16 MB cache. I thought that was more important so I got the 300.(It was a Maxtor.)

It’s been working fine for the last 3 weeks.

It’s not that it will help the video, but he’ll be able to have more things running (or simply have larger projects open) without having the computer slow down whenever he does something. 1 GB is ok, but yes, I’d have to say that you’d be able to tell the difference between 1 and 2 GB of RAM.

I have to say, though, I think that price is a bit high. Exactly what kind of laptop is it and where would he be buying this RAM? Check http://www.crucial.com and see what they charge for his model. You can buy a 1 GB stick yourself and put it in.

May 25, 2005 at 4:59 pm in reply to: Any Bravo II Owners (Mac)?

I just heard back from Primera. All I need is a software update. I figured that was the case, but there are no free updates available on the web. The update will be coming from https://www.charismac.com, but since they charge for the program they don’t let you download anything for free.

Because I asked Primera, however, they sent the request on to Charismac letting them know that I needed it for a Bravo II. (I had found the Charismac page before while searching but I had been unable to solve my problem on my own.)

I suggest contacting Primera tech support if you own a Bravo II. Let them know you need the software that works with Tiger.

I have yet to go home and see if this works yet, but I think I can post this story now, I’m expecting everything to go well tonight.

I can’t help you with the mouse, I’m happy with my plain old non-programable logitech mouse.

But if you’re that into custimization, you should think about something like this:

    https://www.contourdesign.com/shuttlepro/

It comes with software that lets you program it for each application, just like you’re talking about. I bought mine because I thought it would help me in Final Cut, but much to my surprise, I started programing it to make new tabs and switch between them in Safari, control iTunes, and even make new folder in Finder.

Maybe that’s more than you want, but I thought I’d suggest it since I’ve enjoyed mine so much.

They make a smaller one too:

Well, one thing I failed to point out…

Go into System Prefrences and make sure your firewall is on.

I don’t mean to make it sound like you don’t need ANY protection, but my point was that you don’t need much MORE than the built-in firewall provides. But make sure it’s on…I’m pretty sure it comes “off” by default.

  • DV is 25 to 1 compression while Photo-Jpeg is 2 to 1. Having said that then I assume that DV 50 is 12.5 to 1? If this is indeed true then isn’t Photo-Jpeg a better choice due to less compression?
    =====

Well, first off, you’re getting numbers confused. DV is compressed at 5 to 1 (perhaps you’re thinking of 25 mbps?).

And I don’t think that means DVCPRO50 is 2.5 to 1…I’m not sure that it’s that simple. Although I have to say that I don’t know what DVCPRO50’s ratio is so I really can’t comment.

All numbers aside, however, you can’t really say that one is better than another based only on compression ratios. The KIND of compression matters a lot too. As a crude example, imagine simply cropping the top half of a video off so that the screen is half sized. That would be 2 to 1 compression, but clearly not as good as DV!

That’s a bit far fetched, but my point is that you need to look at HOW the space is being saved, not just how much is being saved. What’s being lost? Color sampling? Resolution? Entire frames (as in HDV). Depending on what you need, the “TYPE” of compression you’re talking about may be just fine or terrible. And it doesn’t always match up with which one has “more” or “less” compression.

No…Paranoid is wanting an anit-virus program for a Mac. That’s the kind of thing probably isn’t needed but it couldn’t hurt to be worried about from time to time.

But being worried about spyware? That’s just over the top. I’m afraid there’s not much that will help you. It’s hard to write a program to stop what doesn’t exist.

There really aren’t any number I could give you because there are so many settings. Depending on how they’re set your compression time could vary greatly. It probably also depends on what program you’re doing the compressing with.

The short version is, no, there shouldn’t be a big difference between platforms, assuming all other factors are equal.
