  • how long does it take to send out to dvd

Posted by Stevejr on May 24, 2005 at 2:54 pm

I am interested in getting a G5 system but have been told that it takes longer on a Mac to send out to dvd then on the PC. I do family history products that are about 1 hr to 2hrs in length each one. On my PC that is not even a duel processor that only takes 3 hrs. I heard that it would take up to 6 hrs on a g5 duel processor. Is this true, or what could I do to speed it up so that it is faster to send out. Thanks

There really aren’t any number I could give you because there are so many settings. Depending on how they’re set your compression time could vary greatly. It probably also depends on what program you’re doing the compressing with.

The short version is, no, there shouldn’t be a big difference between platforms, assuming all other factors are equal.

” I heard that it would take up to 6 hrs on a g5 duel processor.”

I also heard that if you eat PopRocks and drink a can of Coke at the same time, you could die.

On my dual 2 gig G5, an hour of DV takes roughly 30-45 minutes to to encode at a VBR. I’m not sure what you mean by “sending it out to DVD”.

I just burned a project that was an hour and 28 minutes.
    Work flow was
Export to QT movie, 17 minutes
Compressor 90 min high quality, audio and video, one hour 17 minutes.
    Build in DVDSP 4 – 8 minutes
Burn on Toast Titanium 6, 11 minutes each.

Mac OS X 10.4 , QT 7.0 Dual 2.5 GHZ, 4 gigs RAM, 23″ HD display, JVC BR-3000 deck, 5 120 gig LaCie Firewire Drives, JVC 17″ H1700 NTSC monitor, FCP HD, DVDSP 4.5, Compressor 1.2.1, Motion 1.01

If you watched Mythbusters, you’d know that’s not true! 😉

What do you mean by “send out” a DVD? Encode? Author? Burn? Mail?

Why do you export out of QT first then into Compressor? Isn’t that a waste of time?

BTW, I didn’t see the Mythbuster episode about the poprocks. BUT, I have a friend who is the friend of the cousin to the machanic of the one of the host to mythbusters and he said that it was all staged. 😉

    Hi Matt

I find better results (and faster workflow) when I export to Compressor directly from Final Cut Pro — saves time, and in my opinion does a better job, as you are not re-rendering footage in the timeline requiring rendering ie. titles etc will be rendered from their source material directly into MPEG2.

Further, FCP provides all edits as compression markers to Compressor, so your compression will have all the GoP frames in all the right spots.

    It’s easy to do this:

It has been the most reliable way for me to get the work done. No issues with synch as noted in many posts when exporting directly into Compressor from FCP.
Works for me, and I get good results, AND, I can be editing while it’s working.

Something for you to think about: when rendering from FCP tp QT to Compressor, you are RE-rendering footage in the timeline eg. titles etc will be rendered from their source material to DV and then into MPEG2.

Further, when rendering direct to MPEG2 via Compressor, FCP provides all edits / scene changes etc., as compression markers to Compressor, so your compression will have all the GoP frames in all the right spots.

Faster workflow, better results; there IS a difference.

If you follow the workflow I prescribe, there are no syncing issues. I always export MPEG2 and audio separately, and it always works, with no loss of sync:

    First export the audio:
