That’s the way the business works. If you have Windows 98 and you want Windows XP then Microsoft makes you pay for that too. If they didn’t charge for new versions then they’d have no reason to design them.

There’s nothing wrong with Panther, by the way. Feel free to keep using it. Only upgrade if there’s a new feature you really feel is worth the price. Otherwise, just stick with what you’ve got.

Follow this:

FILE> EXPORT USING QUICKTIME CONVERSION> FORMAT: STILL IMAGE > OPTIONS> TIFF> OPTIONS> COMPRESSION: NONE

Then open that in Photoshop and run the filter VIDEO: DEINTERLACE

That’s the best you’re gonna get, although it won’t be much. Printing at 300 dpi you’ll get an image that’s probably in the range of 3 inches wide. You can scale up and see how far you can push it, but there’s only so far you can go. At any rate, following my plan will give you the best possible image to work with.

Search that page for “Audio” and you’ll find a bunch of articles. Audio is pretty tricky and the more you learn about it, the better. I’ve pointed out the answer to your question, but if you just read that and ignore the rest I can’t promise you that it will work the way you want. You’re a the top of the ladder for Panther, there are no further updates. So if you don’t need Tiger’s features you’re fine to just stick with what you’ve got.

The easiest way to get the best quality is to export a refrence file from Final Cut with all the settings the same as your sequence, then open that file with Quick Time Pro and Export as an “iPod Movie.”

That will set everything correctly and do the multiple pass VBR. This will work for sure and it should look great.

If you want to save time on encoding (or get a smaller file) then a single pass with lower settings like you’re doing should work, but I know there are a couple of settings that have to be done right or the iPod won’t accept the file. Here is what Apple’s web site says the iPod plays:

Speaking as someone who owns the 501 and the 503 I have to say that I really don’t notice the difference.

I’m sure there’s something about the 503 that makes it “better” but it’s not something I can really put my finger on. I suppose it might be a little smoother, but I suspect that you’d notice that more with a heavier camera. With a camera the size of the 100A I’ve had no problems with either one.

And I do love them both. They’ve served me very well. Extra so considering the reasonable price they cost compared to larger heads.

Legs depend more on personal preferences, but I went with the 525MVB and have been very happy with those as well.
