Are not the DigiBeta meters Vu Meters? Not digital dBFS = dB Full Scale, which quits at 0. Vu references to 0, but major peaks are typically at +3 Vu, with fast transients hitting +6 to +9 at least.

I have seen dub houses asking for ref. level at -12 dBFS, but that doesn’t seem like very much headroom to me. Using the above scenario, where one references 0 Vu to -12 dBFS, you might get 3 dB of headroom. I don’t know what current broadcast standards are for audio (my stuff is mostly silent: animation & moGfx), but I would not be surprised if -18 or -20 dBFS is more common there. I know some Sony Pro DVCam decks have a little tick mark at -18 dBFS.

Let’s see if Bob Zelin or someone else can shed some light…

March 29, 2006 at 6:47 pm in reply to: Black Border Around Captured SD (Beta) Video

Not much you can do about it. That is the nature of capturing from analog (BetaSP) video. If you expect to output to a format that shows the entire image, such as DVD for computer playback, you will need to crop and/or resize. Or, add a constant border frame around everything.

You mention you shoot 16:9. What format? (DV, HDV, HD, etc) I suspect it is your pixel dimensions: most formats other than true HD use rectangular pixels. For example, shoot 16:9 with a Panasonic SX900, SD/DV50, and you should use 720×480 with a 1.2 pixel aspect ratio.

“I plugged in all the inputs to a mixer in the INSERT INPUTS instead of the line inputs”

    — Do you have a Mackie mixer by any chance? ’cause I do that every time I switch cabling. Yesterday, case in point. And that’s with another 12 channels into the proper inputs…

“Will it help me achieve realtime playback within PremierePro using my current dual monitor setup, or is it only really of any use when you want to get an external output signal ie. SDI?”

Yes, that is what all the DeckLink cards are for: getting footage into the computer via external sources (BetaSP, SDI, HD-SDI depending on card), and getting it back out to such external sources.

    What card are you using?
Hate to state the obvious, but is the SDI input selected in the control software?

January 28, 2006 at 6:09 pm in reply to: Field reversal issue

I believe this happens due to the 480 footage being centered in a 486 image, so it’s moved down 3 lines (or up 3 from the bottom). Shifting interlaced footage up or down by an odd number of lines is the equivalent of reversing fields. Move it up or down 1 more pixel/line as Shane suggests, and you have an even # shift, so no field reversal.
I go with reversing the field interpolation, as it’s easier for me to remember to do. But they should give equivalent results… in a perfect world, anyway.
