  • Will DeckLink Help Me In Realtime Previews in PPRo?

    Hi,

I am looking into getting realtime playback of HD footage within Premiere Pro.

I currently capture my footage as HDV and then convert it to uncompressed (1440x1080p) HD for color correction and special fx in AE. In Premiere Pro I create a video for windows project uncompressed (1440x1080p) and do the final edit with the uncompressed footage.

Btw even though the footage is uncompressed I am using a lossless codec (HUFFY) which gives me a 2:1 compression.

However at the moment playback in premier pro is not realtime. I am looking into solutions on how to get realtime playback when previewing in Premiere Pro w/ HD uncompressed footage.

I have a Nvidia 7800GT video card linked up to dual 24″ monitors. I do not have an external reference monitor, all work is done within PPRo. I have a dual pentium running at 3.5Ghz, and Raid0 drives for the video. For the sake of this thread let’s assume that disk speed is sufficient.

I know BlackMagicDesign have the Decklink HD but I do not understand what it will give me in regards to playback (and yes I have read all the info on the site!). Will it help me achieve realtime playback within PremierePro using my current dual monitor setup, or is it only really of any use when you want to get an external output signal ie. SDI?

    Thanks

Yes, that is what all the DeckLink cards are for: getting footage into the computer via external sources (BetaSP, SDI, HD-SDI depending on card), and getting it back out to such external sources.

    Hi Jeff,

Thanks for your response. Sorry for the stupid questions, but from what I am reading from you is the card is just good for getting stuff in and then out to external sources.

I am not interested in getting the stuff out externally, and I already have the footage on the PC in AVI uncompressed format. All I am looking for is a solution to speed up playback within Premiere Pro? Is the DeckLink good for this or do I need to look at something else?

    Cheers

    Hi,

Real time playback is a combination of drive speed and codecs used. Our cards will not make a difference, especially if you’re not concerned with output to a VTR.

If your hard drive setup (raid) is fast enough, then you would normally be able to playback your media in realtime. This of course takes for granted that you have the media as AVI all the way. If you are not getting real time playback on Premier Pro:

    1. The codec selected does not allow realtime playback (will need to use another codec.)

    2. Your raid is not fast enough.

    3. Combination of both 1 and 2.

The BlackMagic setup program will install in your computer a codec that allows, raid speed dependent, realtime HD playback of AVI files.

Thanks for your reply Paul – My suspicion that the DeckLink card wouldn’t actually give me any extra acceleration is true. The marketing material is quite deceptive for newbie!

Anyway I know that my HD system needs to be upgraded it is just a 2*Maxtor 300MB 16MB Cache in RAID 0 configuration and I get 146MB/S throughput. I am planning on upgrading the HD’s.

But with regards to the CODEC. At the moment I am using the lossless HUFFY 2.1.1 CODEC. Can you recommend a good lossless CODEC that would be suitable for realtime playback of HD material?

I tried using the BM CODEC’s. I done a clip export from AE with the BM QT CODEC. Created a project in Premiere using the BM 1080P project option. Imported the clip. Previewing is fine – but it won’t play back within Premiere – presumably you need to have the card!

    Cheers

The codecs I use come from Decklink (with an installed deck link pro card.) Have not used any other uncompressed codec.
